KC Current hire new GM. She’s a seasoned exec who also won a soccer title at Stanford
The Kansas City Current women’s professional soccer team on Thursday announced that Camille Levin has been hired as general manager effective Jan. 15.
She will be responsible for the overall management of the team’s soccer operations and will report directly to ownership, according to a team news release.
“We are thrilled to add a person of Cami’s caliber to the Current executive team,” co-owner Angie Long said in a statement. “Cami is a natural-born leader with tremendous soccer knowledge and an expansive soccer network.
“As we continue to strive to set the standard for our sport and our league, we have no doubt that Cami will be instrumental in helping us achieve our goals.”
The Current, who re-branded from KC NWSL late in 2021, recently selected Washington State University forward Elyse Bennett with their first-round pick in the NWSL Draft. The Current also selected three other players they hope will contribute in 2022 and beyond.
One of Levin’s chief items of business in her new role as GM will be hiring a new head coach. Huw Williams, who was the team’s head coach during its inaugural 2021 season, was reassigned late last year to a position in which he identifies talent.
Levin, 31, brings experience in soccer that spans two decades. She played in college and as a pro in the U.S. and internationally. After retiring as a player, she built a career as a sports executive and gained experience in athlete representation and contract negotiations.
She also happens to be a former Stanford teammate of Current midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta. They helped lead the Cardinal to its first NCAA championship in 2011. Levin later played professionally with Swedish side Göteborg (2012-13) and Australia’s Western Sydney Wanderers (2013-14).
Levin then played for the NWSL’s former Sky Blue FC (now Gotham FC) in 2014 before being selected by the Orlando Pride in the 2015 NWSL Expansion Draft. She also played with the Houston Dash in 2017 and Norwegian side Vålerenga in 2018.
Most recently, Levin has been vice president of Blueprint Sports & Media Entertainment. where she was responsible for all athlete-related activities with the company, according to the Current’s introductory news release on her hire. Before that, she was manager of talent development for WWE, handling all aspects of talent recruitment and management for the pro-wrestling organization.
“It is an honor to join the Kansas City Current as general manager,” Levin said in the team’s Thursday news release. “I am thrilled to be a part of an organization with an unwavering vision of becoming a global leader, not only in women’s soccer, but in sports.
“The Longs and Brittany Matthews continue to build an organization with a strong commitment towards a ‘player-first’ approach, starting with significant investment in the organization and in Kansas City. As a former NWSL player, I sincerely appreciate and respect the history of this league and believe in its bright future with KC leading the way. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to joining the team.”
The Current are scheduled to open preseason camp on Feb. 1. The annual NWSL Challenge Cup begins March 19. The team will play 14 league home games at Children’s Mercy Park in 2022 as construction begins on a brand new purpose-built stadium along the downtown KC riverfront in Berkley Park.
