FC Kansas City rallies for 2-1 win over Portland Thorns FC

FC Kansas City had to wait out a lengthy weather delay before getting started Wednesday night at Swope Soccer Village, but it was worth it in the end for the Blues.

Yael Averbuch and Sydney Leroux scored second-half goals, giving FCKC a 2-1 home victory over Portland Thorns FC in front of a crowd of 428 fans.

The start of the game was delayed for about 2 hours because of the stormy weather.

Portland (9‑5‑4) led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Amandine Henry on a penalty kick in the 44th minute. FCKC (5‑8‑5) evened the score on Averbuch’s unassisted goal in the 65th minute and went ahead on Leroux’s header in the 69th minute. Brittany Ratcliffe assisted on Leroux’s goal.

“It’s good that we got the win and the three points, but the biggest thing is for these players to see that we can play with and beat anyone,” FCKC coach Vlatko Andonovski said.

FC Kansas City will travel to Chicago for a 5 p.m. game on Sunday.
