FC Kansas City’s Sydney Leroux is not thinking about joining Dom Dwyer in Orlando

Hours after husband Dom Dwyer was greeted by droves of Orlando City SC fans in Florida on Tuesday night, FC Kansas City forward Sydney Leroux answered the question that had circulated the soccer-sphere as soon as the news of Dwyer’s departure from Sporting Kansas City was announced earlier in the day: What happens to Leroux’s career now?

“Fight like hell to get back after having a baby,” she wrote on Twitter around midnight. “Focus on FCKC. Support my husband from afar. Be a bad ass mom.”

Leroux was in Seattle with the United States women’s national team, which is preparing for the Tournament of Nations that begins Thursday, when news of Dwyer’s trade broke.

In the evening, as crowds began to gather in wait of Dwyer’s arrival in Orlando, Leroux posted several messages in support of the transaction on Twitter.

Orlando City shares a stadium with Orlando Pride, the National Women’s Soccer League affiliate. Some wondered if Leroux would request a trade, like she did when the two got married in secret in early 2015.

At the time, Leroux inquired about a trade to FCKC during training camp with Seattle Reign FC. She had previously requested to be traded to Seattle from the Boston Breakers before the 2014 season so she could be closer to her mother. A year later, she spoke with Seattle coach Laura Harvey about a potential move to the Midwest.

Leroux said she had insisted if the trade was not possible she would gladly stay in Seattle, but she was promptly traded to the Western New York Flash, where she played three games in 2015 before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.

Leroux landed in Kansas City the next year, following a three-team deal that involved the trade of a second-round pick in the 2017 draft to the Flash. She missed all of 2016 due to pregnancy, and finally returned to an NWSL field this April.

A banged-up and embattled FCKC team has not created plentiful opportunities for Leroux to score this season. She leads the team with three goals and 34 shots taken, 13 on goal, through 12 games. The Blues are ninth in the league standings with 13 points and could miss the playoffs for a second year in a row.

But it does not appear Leroux is eager to leave Kansas City for the Orlando Pride any time soon.

And her team is glad to have her.

“We are excited to have Sydney Leroux play for FC Kansas City and we look forward to her return after the Tournament of Nations,” FCKC public relations director Jeff Hustead told The Star.
