FC Kansas City Blues find a home at UMKC’s Durwood Stadium

In the franchise’s second season, FC Kansas City appears to have found a home at UMKC’s Durwood Stadium.

Since moving to the soccer-only facility from Shawnee Mission North District Activity Complex, the Blues have a 7-0-4 home record. They will try to finish the season undefeated when they host the Boston Breakers in their final home match of the season Wednesday at 7 p.m.

“There is a lot of pride when we play in front of our own fans, and we want to come out and put up a good show,” FC Kansas City coach Vlatko Andonovski said. “Being in front of our own crowd, playing on the field where we practice and not having to travel makes a huge difference.”

FC Kansas City is one of just two teams in the league that is undefeated at home, joining top-ranked Seattle Reign FC. Seattle has a 7-0-3 record at Memorial Stadium.

The Blues have already locked up a spot in the National Women’s Soccer League playoffs through a 1-1 draw with Seattle on Saturday night. With a victory against the Breakers, the Blues would also be able to clinch home field advantage in the semifinals.

The Breakers, on the other hand, were the first team eliminated from the NWSL playoffs, with a 4-14-2 record this season. FC Kansas City won the first matchup 2-0 on May 25 with goals from Amy Rodriguez and Nikki Phillips.

While the match looks favorable for FC Kansas City on paper, it will be its fourth game in 11 days. In the first three, the Blues went 1-1-1, with a victory against Sky Blue FC, a loss to the Washington Spirit and the draw with Seattle.

After Boston, FC Kansas City has one final regular-season game. The Blues will travel to Chicago to take on the Chicago Red Stars at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
