Winners of seven straight, the Kansas City Comets have another big weekend ahead

The Kansas City Comets continued to climb closer to the top of the Major Arena Soccer League standings with a pair of road victories against the Harrisburg Heat over the weekend.

The Comets opened the weekend with a 6-4 win on Saturday, Feb. 22, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. After jumping ahead 6-1, the Comets allowed the Heat back into the game but shut them down after they came within two scores 25 seconds into the fourth quarter.

On Sunday, the Comets scrapped to a 4-2 victory in a difficult game where shots weren’t finding the net as often as they typically have. Still, the Comets persevered and never trailed.

“Harrisburg gave us everything they had,” Comets coach Stefan Stokic said. “Harrisburg was flying. I haven’t seen Harrisburg play like that in a long time. They came out and wanted to beat us.”

Despite the offensive struggles, the Comets’ defense remained sharp and shut out the Heat in the second half. Stokic highlighted KC’s game management, including a patient 15-pass buildup to the Comets’ fourth goal, which Leo Acosta scored.

“We found a way to overcome that and win the game,” Stokic said. “At moments, you have to be able to do that. To be able to win a championship, you have to win games like that.”

Kansas City’s win on Sunday completed the weekend sweep in two games and season-series sweep in three. It broke a streak of 13 times the Comets were unable to sweep a doubleheader in consecutive days dating back to 2021.

Since losing to San Diego on Jan. 15, the Comets have won seven straight and taken all 21 points possible. That is exactly what the Comets hoped for, especially with a difficult schedule coming throughout March.

The Comets have nine games and three doubleheader weekends remaining.

The path toward the MASL Shield — the team with the highest point total in a season — has been simplified. The Comets sit second with 38 points from 15 games, just five points behind Chihuahua and their 19 games played.

On the KC Comets schedule...

The Comets now reset for another back-to-back weekend, beginning at Cable Dahmer Arena on Saturday, March 1, when they host Utica City FC in a rematch of last year’s Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Saturday’s matchup will also be a clash of two MVP candidates with Rian Marques representing the Comets as the MASL assists leader and Kelvin Oliveira representing Utica City as the MASL goals leader. Tickets for the showdown, which includes the Celebrity Game, are available at kccomets.com/tickets.

The Comets will end the weekend with a Sunday matchup on the road against the Milwaukee Wave. The Comets hope to get payback for an overtime defeat in December.
