A five-goal debut for Zach Reget put an exclamation point on a busy and emotional week for the Kansas City Comets.

The Comets placed four players on trade waivers and signed college draft pick Jakib Jones before making a bold move: trading three players plus cash to the Harrisburg Heat in return for Zach Reget, a Major Arena Soccer League veteran and U.S. Futsal National Team player.

John Sosa was empathetic about the three teammates who were traded away, saying, “More than anything we’re sorry that it had to come down to that because we all had a little bit of fault. It’s not just them, it’s all of us for not accomplishing what we were supposed to.”

That trade certainly had an effect on the Comets ahead of their pivotal matchup at Cable Dahmer Arena against the Florida Tropics on Friday.

Reget was motivated in his Comets debut against Florida, the team he was with for four seasons before being traded to Harrisburg on Feb. 4.

“It’s a big change,” Reget said. “I didn’t expect to get traded, I didn’t expect all of this to happen. It was kind of out of the dark. God works in weird ways, so I’m excited and it’s His path.”

The former MASL Rookie of the Year enjoyed the second five-goal game of his career Friday, leading the Comets to a 12-6 victory against his former team.

“When you play your old boss, you are always going to enjoy that,” he said.

The Comets came out of the gates hot with a 5-0 first-half lead — thanks to five different scorers — before Florida got on the board. After scoring once in the first half, Reget put the Comets ahead 7-2 with a laser to the top shelf.

Reget added a fourth-quarter hat trick to end the night with five goals.

“That’s a guy that knows the game,” Sosa said of his newest teammate. “We all know what he is capable of doing. The most impressive thing has been the humility that he came in with. You can tell that he’s hungry to contribute and we are lucky to have him on our side now.”

With both teams fighting for second place in the Eastern Conference, the Comets head to Florida for a matchup on Sunday before returning to Cable Dahmer Arena on Feb. 26 for a meeting with the Milwaukee Wave.
