Missouri Comets coach, forward honored with MASL awards

Missouri Comets forward Leo Gibson and coach Vlatko Andonovski won two of the five major individual season awards announced on Thursday by the Major Arena Soccer League.

Gibson, who led the Comets to a 20-0 regular-season record, was selected the league’s most valuable player after setting new league records for points (93), goals (48), assists (45), points in a game (12) and power play goals (15).

Andonovski, who paced the Comets to an undefeated record in the regular season and the Central Division Championship, was voted the league’s coach of the year.

The league’s other award winners were Baltimore’s William Vanzela, goalkeeper of the year; Baltimore Blast’s Pat Healey, defender of the year; and Gordy Gurson of the St. Louis Ambushy was recognized as the league’s rookie of the year.

Each team’s coaching staff, as well as the league’s front office, voted on the awards through the end of the regular season.
