Fishing report for April 14
Missouri
NORFORK: 59 degrees, murky in the creeks, clear on the main lake, 6 inches low. Outlook: Bink’s Guide Service reports: Stripers good at night on stickbaits along the banks; crappies good on jigs along the banks; bass fair on plastic baits in the shallows; walleyes fair on stickbaits, plastic baits; white bass excellent on plastic baits, spinners in the back of creeks.
TRUMAN: 52 degrees, stained, 1 foot low. Outlook: Steve Blake Guide Service reports: Bass good on spinnerbaits, black and blue jigs, Wiggle Warts in the mouths of the pockets and halfway back in coves; catfish good on cut shad in less than 10 feet of water; crappies poor to fair (a few are being caught on minnows). Below the dam: walleyes poor to fair on jigs; paddlefish snagging good.
BULL SHOALS: Upper 50s, clear, near normal. Outlook: 125 Marina reports: All species of black bass very good on Alabama rigs in the shallows or grubs in 20 to 30 feet of water off main-lake points.
SMITHVILLE: 54 degrees, fairly clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: Bass good on jigs, spinnerbaits in the shallows in the coves; crappies fair on jigs, minnows in the brush in the river arms and off the marina docks; channel catfish fair to good on cut bait in the Little Platte arm.
STOCKTON: 55 degrees, clear, 2 feet high. Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: Crappies good on jigs in 2 to 4 feet of water along spawning banks; bass fair to good on jigs from secondary points to the back of coves; walleyes fair to good on jerkbaits early and late in 2 to 10 feet of water off main-lake points.
TABLE ROCK: 56 degrees, off-color, near normal. Outlook: White River Lodge reports: Bass fair on 1/2 -ounce football jigs (fish are transitioning toward spawning banks); crappies fair in the James River arm; white bass fair early and late on white jigs, Flicker Shad in the James and the Kings river arms.
TANEYCOMO: Murky, sporadic power generation. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: Below Fall Creek: Rainbow trout fair on air-inflated night crawlers, minnows. Trophy Area: Trout fair on shad flies.
REED AREA: 57 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: Bass fair on plastic baits near brush; channel catfish fair on cut bait, worms; crappies good on tube jigs, minnows near brush, along weed lines; bluegills, redear sunfish fair on worms.
POMME DE TERRE: 54 degrees, clearing, normal. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: Bass fair to good on a variety of lures; crappies fair to good on jigs, minnows (fish are in prespawn).
JACOMO: 56 degrees, clear normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: Crappies fair to good early and late on minnows, jigs out from spawning banks; channel catfish fair at night on chicken liver, night crawlers; bass good on minnows, shallow-diving crankbaits in the shallows in the coves; bluegills poor to fair on crickets, waxworms.
BLUE SPRINGS: Mid-50s, stained, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: Crappies fair to good on jigs, minnows off the marina docks and out from spawning banks; bass fair to good on crankbaits, spinnerbaits, minnows in the shallows; hybrids fair by the spillway; bluegills good on red worms, crickets in rocky areas.
LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 53 degrees, murky, 3 feet low. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: Crappies fair on jigs, minnows in 15 to 20 feet of water in brush; bass good on crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs along windy banks.
LONGVIEW: 54 degrees, murky, near normal. Outlook: Longview Marina reports: All species poor.
Kansas
MELVERN: Low 50s, clear, 1 1/2 feet low. Outlook: Melvern Lake Marina reports: Crappies good on minnows, jigs off the marina docks; catfish good on crappie entrails off marina docks; white bass good on Road Runners, jigs along face of dam and points.
WILSON: Mid-50s, clear, 10 feet low. Outlook: Knothead’s reports: Walleyes fair on chartreuse jigs along the dam and in Hell Creek; stripers good on spoons, jigs in the Otoe area; bass good on plastic baits in the Otoe area; crappies fair on minnows, jigs north of the Hell Creek bridge.
WYANDOTTE: 56 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Wyandotte Boats reports: Crappies very good on jigs, minnows in 15 feet of water and less along spawning areas; bass good on plastic baits in the shallows; white bass, hybrids fair trolling crankbaits on the main lake.
CLINTON: 56 degrees, fairly clear, near normal. Outlook: Don and Tom’s Bait and Tackle reports: Crappies good on jigs tipped with minnows in 6 to 8 feet of water (fish are near spawning banks).
TUTTLE CREEK: Mid-50s, clearing, 1 foot low. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: Catfish fair to good on cut shad on the north end; crappies fair on jigs, minnows along the banks in the evening.
COFFEY COUNTY: 85 degrees at the hot-water outlet, 65 degrees on the main lake, murky, normal. Outlook: Coffey County reports: White bass fair. Windy conditions have affected fishing, access.
PERRY: 56 degrees on main lake, fairly clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Don and Tom’s Bait and Tackle reports: Crappies fair on jigs, minnows out from spawning banks (fish are in prespawn).
LaCYGNE: 63 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Linn County Parks reports: Bass fair; crappies fair.
SHAWNEE MISSION: 55 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: Trout fair on worms, PowerBait near Shelter 12 and the dam; catfish fair on dough bait along the north side; bass fair on spinnerbaits across from the marina.
KILL CREEK: 55 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: Trout fair on PowerBait near the island and along north shore; bass fair on spinnerbaits, plastic baits; catfish fair on dough bait, liver in the evening.
GLEN ELDER: Low 50s, fairly clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: Catfish fair to good on cut bait, night crawlers in the river channel and on the south end of the lake.
EL DORADO: 57 degrees, murky, 6 inches low. Outlook: Wildlife, Parks and Tourism reports: Bass fair to good on creature baits, spinnerbaits in the creeks and along points; wipers poor to fair on crankbaits, spinners in shallow points on warm days.
MILFORD: Mid-50s, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: Smallmouth bass fair on stickbaits, crankbaits, jigs, plastic baits along windy banks and points; wipers fair on live bait along windy banks and points; catfish fair to good on cut shad along the causeway on the north end.
POMONA: 53 degrees, murky, 2 feet low. Outlook: Lighthouse Bay Marina reports: Crappies fair on jigs along spawning banks in the evenings and off the marina docks.
HILLSDALE: 55 degrees, fairly clear, 1 1/2 feet low. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: All species poor.

Brent’s best bet
The fishing is on the rise at Melvern Lake. The crappies are biting, especially off the marina docks. White bass are being taken off the face of the dam and points, and channel catfish also are starting to hit.
