Fishing

Missouri

TABLE ROCK: 60 degrees, off-color, normal. Outlook: White River Outfitters reports: spotted bass good to excellent on  3/4 -ounce white jigging spoons in creek arms in 35 to 50 feet of water; smallmouth, largemouth bass fair to good on topwater walking baits.

NORFORK: 59 degrees, clear in man lake, dingy in creeks, 4 feet high. Outlook: Bink’s Guide Service reports: stripers good on Bink’s spoons in 30 to 40 feet of water off main-lake points; bass good on spinnerbaits along banks; crappies good on jigging spoons, minnows in 30 to 40 feet of water in Corps of Engineers brush piles.

LONGVIEW: 55 degrees, 38-inch clarity, 1 foot low. Outlook: Longview Lake Marina reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows off the marina docks.

TRUMAN: 54 degrees, dingy, 1 1/2 feet high. Outlook: Cody’s Guide Service reports: white bass, wipers poor to fair; catfish fair to good drifting shad in deep water; crappies fair to good on jigs in 20 feet of water along bluffs; catfish good drifting cut shad in 20 to 60 feet of water. Below the dam: white bass poor to fair on a variety of baits.

BULL SHOALS: upper 50s, clear, 1.8 feet high. Outlook: 125 Marina reports: smallmouth bass good early on topwater lures and spinnerbaits, and during the day on jigging spoons in 20 feet of water off main-lake points and along windy banks; catfish fair on trotlines with live bait.

SMITHVILLE: Low 50s, clear, normal. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies good on minnows 8 to 10 feet down in 20 feet of water in main-lake brush.

LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 57 degrees, clear,  1/2 foot low. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: bass poor to fair (a few are being caught on jigs, soft-plastic baits in 15 feet of water off points); crappies fair on minnows in the brush in 5 to 12 feet of water; catfish fair on cut bait in 25 to 35 feet of water off main-lake points

JACOMO: 52 to 54 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: crappies fair to good on jigs off marina docks; channel catfish fair on chicken liver, minnows off marina docks.

BLUE SPRINGS: Low 50s, clear, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: crappies good on small minnows, small jigs off the docks; bluegills good on wax worms off marina docks.

REED AREA: 57 degrees, clear, full pool. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: trout good on a variety of baits at Coot and Plover lakes.

STOCKTON: 52 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: crappies fair on jigs in 20 to 30 feet of water along bluffs; walleyes fair on jigs with night crawlers along bluffs; bass fair on jigs, crankbaits off secondary points and in mouths of coves.

TANEYCOMO: Clear, increased flow. Oxygen level in water much improved. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: trout very good drifting Gulp Eggs, egg flies in the Monkey Island and Branson Landing areas.

POMME DE TERRE: 58 degrees, dingy, normal. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: all species poor.

Kansas

WILSON: 52 degrees, clear, 10 feet low. Outlook: Knothead’s reports: largemouth, smallmouth bass fair on shad fished off the bottom.

PERRY: 56 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Don and Tom’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies fair on jigs (small fish are being caught); catfish fair on cut shad.

CLINTON: 50 degrees, clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Clinton Lake Marina reports: crappies fair to good early on jigs off the marina docks.

POMONA: Low 50s, dingy, 1 foot low. Outlook: Lighthouse Bay Marina reports: crappies fair on jigs in 6 to 8 feet of water in the brush and off docks.

MELVERN: 55 degrees, murky, 1 foot low. Outlook: Melvern Lake Marina reports: crappies fair on ice jigs, minnows off the marina docks.

MILFORD: 57 degrees, fairly clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: low fishing pressure. All species poor.

LA CYGNE: 70s on the main lake, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Linn County Park reports: all species poor.

KILL CREEK: 48 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: trout fair on minnows, PowerBait, Little Cleos near the boat ramp and on the north side of the dam.

SHAWNEE MISSION: 48 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: trout fair to good on PowerBait, minnows, spinners in coves and in deep water on the main lake.

EL DORADO: low 50s, dingy, 1 foot low. Outlook: Wildlife, Parks and Tourism reports: crappies poor to fair ( a few are being caught on minnows along brush and ledges); white bass, wipers poor to fair.

GLEN ELDER: Low 50s, dingy, normal. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: white bass fair in southwest corner of the lake.

HILLSDALE: 50 degrees, slightly dingy, half-foot high. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows off marina docks and along the dam.

TUTTLE CREEK: High 50s, fairly clear, normal. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: all species poor.

COFFEY COUNTY: High 60s midlake, stained, normal. Outlook: Coffey County reports: all species poor due to wind.

Hunting

Missouri

FOUNTAIN GROVE: 55,050 ducks (mostly mallards, gadwalls); 150 Canada geese. 22 water blinds, 17 walk-ins are in use. Heavy hunting pressure. On Nov. 21-22, 200 hunters shot 409 ducks.

SWAN LAKE: 120,045 ducks (mostly mallards, pintails); 9,380 geese (90 percent snows).

SQUAW CREEK: 74,612 ducks (50,465 mallards, the rest a mix of species); 224,376 geese (mostly snows).

NODAWAY VALLEY: 20,510 ducks (half mallards). Heavy hunting pressure. Hunting has been good. On Nov. 21-22, 93 hunters shot 394 ducks.

BOB BROWN: 39,150 ducks (mostly mallards, pintails, green-winged teal and gadwalls). Heavy hunting pressure. Hunting has been excellent. On Nov. 21-22, 99 hunters shot 499 ducks.

GRAND PASS: 180,000 ducks (mostly mallards). Hunting 31 parties. Hunting pressure has been heavy. Parties are being turned away. Hunting has been very good. On Nov. 21-22, 231 hunters shot 913 ducks.

FOUR RIVERS: 56,829 ducks (mostly mallards). Hunting 20 parties. On Nov. 21-22, 96 hunters shot 248 ducks and 2 snow geese.

SCHELL-OSAGE: 42,275 ducks (mostly mallards). 38 positions. Hunting has been fair. On Nov. 21-22, 203 hunters shot 425 ducks.

MONTROSE: 17,070 ducks (a mix of species). Light hunting pressure. On Nov. 21-22, 48 hunters shot 78 ducks.

SMITHVILLE: 14,000 ducks (mostly mallards), 6,000 geese (two-thirds dark geese). Hunting has been good.

OTTER SLOUGH: 16,500 ducks (mix of species); 100 geese. Heavy hunting pressure. Hunting 30 positions. Hunting has been fair. On Sunday and Monday, 197 hunters 552 ducks.

DUCK CREEK: 22,400 ducks; 178 geese Hunting has been poor. On Friday and Saturday, 281 hunters shot 336 ducks.

Kansas

CHEYENNE BOTTOMS: 30,000 ducks (mallard numbers are increasing); 150,000 geese (mostly white-fronts). Pools are losing water. From Nov. 16-19, hunters averaged 2.7 ducks and 1.4 geese daily.

MARAIS DES CYGNES: 20,000 ducks (mostly mallards); 500 Canada geese. Water conditions are fair to good, habitat conditions good.

NEOSHO: 20,000 ducks (mix of species). Excellent water conditions. Hunting has been good.

FLINT HILLS: 2,250 ducks (mostly mallards). Conditions are poor. Hunting has been poor.

PERRY: 3,000 ducks (mostly mallards); 1000 geese (mostly Canadas). Hunting has been fair.

TUTTLE CREEK: Low waterfowl numbers. Habitat is poor because of earlier flooding.

MILFORD: 500 ducks (mostly pintails, teal, shovelers). Habitat conditions poor. Hunting has been fair.

QUIVIRA: 19,400 ducks (75 percent mallards); 88,500 geese (mostly whitefronts, Canadas); 4,100 sandhill cranes. Hunting is closed because of whooping cranes on the refuge.

MELVERN: Low duck numbers (mostly mallards, redheads, gadwalls). Hunting has been fair.

CLINTON: 450 ducks (mostly mallard, pintails, gadwalls); 80 geese. Good water conditions in marshes.

HILLSDALE: 6,500 ducks (mostly mallards). Water, habitat conditions are good.

KIRWIN: 25,00 ducks (mostly mallards); 250,000 geese (mostly snows). Waterfowl, pheasant hunting good.

GLEN ELDER: 38,000 ducks (mostly mallards, redheads); 19,500 geese (75 percent snows). Hunting has been fair to good.

McPHERSON WETLANDS: 1,600 ducks (mostly mallards, gadwalls). Habitat conditions good, water conditions fair. In last week, 30 hunters shot 62 ducks and 1 goose.

JAMESTOWN: 3,200 ducks (mostly mallards); 700 Canada geese. Last week hunters averaged 1.7 ducks daily.

Brent’s best bet

The time that duck hunters wait for has arrived. The mallards are in. Large numbers of greenheads have stopped at the Swan Lake and Squaw Creek national wildlife refuges and the Grand Pass Conservation Area in Missouri, and the hunting is heating up.
