Missouri deer hunters shot 97,171 deer on opening weekend of the firearms season — the highest total in five years.

The harvest exceeded last year’s opening-weekend kill by 5,711 deer and and was the largest since 2010, when hunters shot 97,856 deer on opening weekend.

Texas was the leading county with 2,184 deer checked in. Howell was second with 1,959 and Franklin third with 1,899.

The season will continue through Nov. 24.
