Fishing

Missouri

▪ NORFORK: 51 degrees, clear, 4 feet low. Outlook: Bink’s Guide Service reports: stripers, wipers, bass, crappies good on white Bink’s Spoons along steep bluff banks.

▪ TABLE ROCK: Low 50s, clear, 4 feet low. Outlook: White River Lodge reports: largemouth and smallmouth bass good on suspending stickbaits along windy banks; spotted bass good on jigging spoons in deep cuts; crappies good on jigs along docks in the James and Kings river arms.

▪ LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 48 degrees, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: bass good on buzzbaits, jigs in 3 to 12 feet of water in cuts near secondary points; crappies good on jigs, minnows in 12 feet of water in main-lake brush.

▪ TANEYCOMO: 49 degrees, clear, sporadic power generation. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: Trophy Area: trout good on No. 14 or 16 zebra midges with copper or black heads under strike indicators early and late or under cloudy conditions, and on No. 12 scuds in flooded gravel, and on 1/50th-ounce sculpin jigs under strike indicators. Below Fall Creek: trout good on Gulp Eggs, 1/16th-ounce black jigs.

▪ TRUMAN: 44 degrees, stained, 1 foot high. Outlook: Tightwad Bait and Tackle reports: crappies fair on jigs with Crappie Nibbles in 8 to 11 feet of water along bluffs; white bass, hybrids good on jigging spoons in less than 10 feet along windy banks; catfish very good on jug lines with goldfish, shad sides 20 to 30 feet down in 40 to 60 feet of water in the channels.

▪ LONGVIEW: 42 degrees, 51-inch clarity, normal. Outlook: Longview Lake Marina reports: crappies, white bass good on chartreuse jigs off the marina docks early in the morning.

▪ JACOMO: High 30s, clear, normal. Outlook: Jacomo Marina reports: crappies good on small plastic tube jigs or marabou jigs off the marina docks.

▪ BLUE SPRINGS: 36 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Blue Springs Lake Marina reports: crappies good on jigs off the marina docks.

▪ STOCKTON: 45 degrees, clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: crappies fair on jigs in 30 feet of water along bluffs and bluff ends; walleyes good on jigs with night crawlers along bluffs; bass fair on jerkbaits in 6 to 15 feet of water along rocky shorelines.

▪ BULL SHOALS: Low 50s, clear, 6 feet low. Outlook: 125 Marina reports: largemouth, Kentucky bass good on spinnerbaits along windy banks three-quarters of way back in coves.

▪ SMITHVILLE: 40 degrees, stained, slightly high. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies excellent on jigs under shad schools on the main lake and off the docks at Camp Branch and Little Platte marinas and in Saliboat Cove.

▪ REED AREA: Upper 30s, clear, full pool. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: crappies good on jigs under bobbers when there is no ice; trout fair on PowerBait, microjigs.

▪ POMME DE TERRE: 49 degrees, clear, 3 feet high. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: bass poor to fair (a few are being caught on suspending stickbaits, crankbaits in less than 10 feet of water); crappies poor to fair (a few are being caught on jigs 15 feet down in 30 feet of water).

Kansas

▪ WILSON: High 30s, clear, 8 feet low. Outlook: Knothead’s reports: crappies fair on jigs in the brush; white bass good on jigs along rocky banks; stripers good on slab spoons in 30 feet of water.

▪ MILFORD: Low 40s, clear, slightly high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: crappies fair to good on jigs in 15 to 18 feet of water in brush along dropoffs; white bass, wipers fair on jigging spoons in 25 feet of water; smallmouth bass good on jerkbaits on the lower end of lake.

▪ COFFEY COUNTY: Low 50s on the main lake, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Coffey County reports: white bass good, wipers fair to good; largemouth bass fair.

▪ MELVERN: 39 degrees, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Melvern Marina reports: crappies very good on tube jigs with Crappie Nibbles in 25 feet of water in main-lake brush and fair to good on Kastmasters, ice jigs off marina docks.

▪ POMONA: 39 degrees, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Lighthouse Bay Marina reports: crappies good on jigs, Swedish Pimples off marina docks from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

▪ GLEN ELDER: High 30s, clear, 2 foot low. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: white bass fair on jigs along dam; flathead catfish fair on jigging spoons on the main lake.

▪ HILLSDALE: Low 40s, clear, slightly high. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: crappies fair on jigs off marina docks.

▪ EL DORADO: 40 degrees, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Wildlife, Parks and Tourism reports: crappies fair on jigs in brush along channel dropoffs.

▪ PERRY: 37 degrees, clear, 2 feet high. Outlook: Bait Hut reports: crappies fair on jigs in 15 feet of water in brush.

▪ CLINTON: 38 degrees, clear, 3 feet low. Outlook: Clinton Marina reports: crappies, white bass fair on jigs, Crappie Candy off marina docks.

▪ LA CYGNE: High 50s midlake, clear, normal. Outlook: Linn County Parks: all species poor.

▪ SHAWNEE MISSION: Upper 30s, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: all species poor.

▪ KILL CREEK: Upper 30s, 1- to 2-foot clarity, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: all species poor.

▪ HERITAGE: Upper 30s, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: all species poor.

▪ TUTTLE CREEK: Low 40s, muddy, 3 feet high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: all species poor.

Other area waters

▪ GRAND (OKLA.): 41 degrees, fairly clear, normal. Outlook: Matt Watson reports: catfish very good on fresh shad in 3 to 40 feet of water, depending on conditions (on windy days, fish are being caught on the mud flats close to the channel; on calm days fish are being caught in deeper water); crappies fair on 1/8-th ounce Go-Go Minnows near schools of shad.

▪ WHITE RIVER (ARK.): clear, variable power generation. Outlook: Gaston’s White River Resort reports: Fly fishing: trout good drifting San Juan worms, jigs peach or orange egg patterns (not much wade fishing has been available because of current). Spin fishing: trout good on fluorescent pink PowerBait worms; live redworms, night crawlers and spoons.

▪ BEAVER (ARK.): 45 degrees, clear, low. Outlook: Bailey’s Beaver Lake Guide Service reports: stripers fair trolling live shad in deep water on the main lake.

Hunting

Missouri

▪ FOUNTAIN GROVE: 44,000 ducks (mostly mallards); 2,000 geese. Hunting 40 positions. Hunting has been poor. On Saturday and Sunday, 149 hunters took 160 ducks.

▪ SQUAW CREEK: 72,000 ducks (mostly mallards); 2,685 geese (mostly Canadas).

▪ SWAN LAKE: 57,970 ducks (mostly mallards); 85,000 geese (mostly snows). (Ninety-five bald eagles and 21 trumpeter swans also were found on the latest count.)

▪ BOB BROWN: 42,400 ducks (mostly mallards). On Saturday and Sunday, 80 hunters shot 115 ducks.

▪ NODAWAY VALLEY: 29,610 ducks (mostly mallards). Hunting has been fair. On Saturday and Sunday, 23 hunters shot 63 ducks.

▪ GRAND PASS: 150,000 ducks (mostly mallards). Hunting 38 positions. Hunting has been fair. On Tuesday, 102 hunters shot 291 ducks.

▪ FOUR RIVERS: 99,000 ducks (mostly mallards). Hunting 23 positions. Hunting has been fair. On Tuesday, 25 hunters shot 59 ducks. On Monday 48 hunters took 57 ducks.

▪ SCHELL-OSAGE: 93,400 ducks (mostly mallards); 400 Canada geese. Hunting 38 positions. On Tuesday, hunters averaged 2.6 ducks per person.

▪ SMITHVILLE: 5,000 mallards; 7,000 geese (5,000 snows). Hunting has been good.

▪ MONTROSE: 6,700 ducks (mostly mallards); 300 Canada geese. Hunting has been poor. On Saturday and Sunday, 47 hunters shot 54 ducks.

▪ OTTER SLOUGH: 38,850 ducks (mostly mallards), 36,400 geese (mostly snows). Thirty-four spots available. Hunting has been fair. On Sunday and Monday, 199 hunters shot 301 ducks and 1 goose.

▪ DUCK CREEK: 6,200 ducks (mostly mallards). Heavy weekend hunting pressure. On Saturday and Sunday, 313 hunters shot 229 ducks.

Kansas

▪ CHEYENNE BOTTOMS: 70,000 ducks (mostly mallards, gadwalls and widgeons); 150,000 geese (half darks, half lights).

▪ MARAIS DES CYGNES: 20,000 ducks (mostly mallards); a few geese. Hunters averaged 0.7 ducks per person over the weekend.

▪ QUIVIRA: 1,945 ducks (mostly mallards); 6,000 geese (80 percent light geese).

▪ MELVERN: 4,000 ducks (two-third mallards); 500 Canada geese. Most of the birds are staying on the refuge.

▪ MILFORD: 200 ducks (mostly mallards); 500 geese. Hunting has been poor to fair.

▪ PERRY: 3,000 ducks (mostly mallards); 3,000 Canada geese. Most of the waterfowl are on the lake. Hunting has been fair.

▪ TUTTLE CREEK: 2,000 ducks; 100 Canada geese. Hunting has been fair.

▪ HILLSDALE: Good waterfowl numbers (mostly mallards). Hunting has been fair.

▪ GLEN ELDER: 5,000 mallards, 10,000 divers; 114,000 geese (97 percent snows). Hunting has been fair to good.

▪ NEOSHO: 30,000 ducks (mostly mallards); 150 Canada geese. Hunting has been fair.

▪ KIRWIN: 500,000 geese (80 percent snows); 400,000 ducks (half mallards).

▪ FLINT HILLS: Low waterfowl numbers. Hunting has been poor.

▪ CLINTON: 200 ducks; 500 Canada geese. Hunting has been poor.

▪ McPHERSON VALLEY WETLANDS: Less than 100 ducks. Hunting has been poor.

▪ JAMESTOWN: Low waterfowl numbers.

Brent’s best bet

The fishing continues to heat up at Norfork Lake on the Missouri-Arkansas line. The action is rated as good by guides, with stripers, white bass, wipers and crappies being caught on white Bink’s spoons along bluffs and bluff ends.
