Fishing

Missouri

NORFORK: 67 degrees, clear on main lake, off-color in creeks, normal. Outlook: Bink’s Guide Service reports: crappies, walleyes, bass good on white or pink one-quarter-ounce Bink’s spoons in 30 feet of water in Corps of Engineers brush piles.

POMME DE TERRE: 63 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: crappies fair to good on jigs, minnows in 15 feet of water in brush; white bass very good on Rooster Tails in shallows; bass poor to fair ( a few are being caught on spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, shallow-running crankbaits); muskies good on crankbaits, glide baits in shallows.

TRUMAN: 62 degrees, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Sterett Creek Marina reports: crappies good on minnows, jigs in 2 to 8 feet of water in the brush in the Grand arm and in 15 to 22 feet of water on the deep flats in the Bucksaw area; white bass, hybrids good on Rooster Tails, Rat-L-Traps off windy points.

BULL SHOALS: 65 degrees, clear,  3/4 foot low. Outlook: 125 Marina reports: smallmouth bass good early on topwater lures and spinnerbaits, and during the day on jigging spoons in 20 feet of water off main-lake points and along windy banks; catfish fair on trotlines with live bait.

SMITHVILLE: 59 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies good (but most of the fish are small) on jigs, minnows off the docks; bass fair to good on spinnerbaits, square-bill crankbaits, soft-plastic baits in coves and along laydowns, stumps, brush in shallows; crappies good on minnows 8 to 10 feet down in 20 feet of water in main-lake brush; channel catfish good on cut bait, night crawlers in the back of coves and in the shallows on flats.

LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 66 degrees, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: crappies poor to fair (a few are being caught on minnows, jigs along windy banks); bass fair on jigs crankbaits in 12 to 15 feet of water off main-lake points.

LONGVIEW: 62 degrees, 38-inch clarity, 1 foot low. Outlook: Longview Lake Marina reports: crappies good on jigs, minnows in the main-lake brush and off the marina docks.

JACOMO: Low 60s, slightly stained, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: crappies good on minnows in main-lake brush and on jigs and minnows off the docks; bluegills good on crickets; channel catfish fair on minnows, worms suspended on the main lake; white bass fair trolling with crankbaits.

TABLE ROCK: High 60s, clearing, stained, 1.8 feet low. Outlook: Pete’s Pro Guide Service reports: bass poor to fair (a few are being caught on topwater lures early and on cloudy days, and shaky-head jigs in cedars).

BLUE SPRINGS: Low 60s, clear, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: crappies good on small minnows, small jigs near the docks; hybrids fair to good on swimbaits near the Blow Hole and in deep water along the dam; channel catfish good on worms near boat dock and on the main lake.

REED AREA: 57 degrees, clear, full pool. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: black bass fair on plastic baits near brush; channel catfish fair on cut bait, chicken livers; crappies fair on tube jigs near brush.

STOCKTON: 62 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: walleyes fair on jigs with night crawlers in 13 to 18 feet of water; crappies good on jigs in 18 feet of water along channel drops and bluffs; bass fair on square-bill crankbaits off secondary points and the back of creeks.

TANEYCOMO: Clear, very little current. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: trout fair on scud flies.

Kansas

WILSON: 58 degrees, clear, 10 feet low. Outlook: Knothead’s reports: stripers good on slab spoons, live bait in 20 feet of water or topwater lures where fish are surfacing; smallmouth bass good on crankbaits, spinnerbaits in the coves; largemouth bass good on shad, minnows along dropoffs; walleyes fair on jigs with night crawlers along rocky banks.

PERRY: 60 degrees, murky, 1 foot high. Outlook: Don and Tom’s Bait and Tackle reports: white bass good on minnows, jigs on the north end or off docks at Rock Creek Marina; crappies poor to fair (a few are being caught in main-lake brush); blue catfish good on shad drifted in 30 feet of water on main lake.

CLINTON: 63 degrees, clear, normal. 1 foot high. Outlook: Clinton Lake Marina reports: crappies poor to fair white or chartreuse grubs off docks and on main lake; white bass, channel catfish fair.

WYANDOTTE: 62 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Wyandotte Boats reports: wipers good trolling crankbaits on the main lake; crappies fair on minnows in 12 to 15 feet of water on the main lake; channel catfish good on minnows in the shallows.

POMONA: 63 degrees, clear,  1/2 -foot low. Outlook: Lighthouse Bay Marina reports: crappies fair on jigs in 6 to 8 feet of water in the brush and off docks; white bass fair on jigging spoons off main-lake points.

MELVERN: 60 degrees, fairly clear,  1/2 -foot low. Outlook: Melvern Lake Marina reports: crappies fair on minnows 15 feet of water; white bass, black bass fair to good along dam and rocky shorelines.

MILFORD: mid 60s, clear, normal. 1 foot high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: wipers fair to good early and late on topwater lures, Wiper Pro spoons,;crappies poor to fair (a few are being caught on jigs, minnows in the brush).

LA CYGNE: 70s on the main lake, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Linn County Park reports: bass fair to good on spinnerbaits, plastic baits in the shallows.

KILL CREEK: 61 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: trout fair on a variety of baits.

SHAWNEE MISSION: Low 60s degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: trout good on yellow PowerBait, Little Cleos on east end of lake.

COFFEY COUNTY: 70 degrees mid-lake, clear, normal. Outlook: Coffey County reports: smallmouth bass fair to good on on plastic baits along the riprap.

EL DORADO: 61 degrees, fairly clear, normal. Outlook: Wildlife, Parks and Tourism reports: walleyes fair on jigging spoons, crankbaits on main-lake structure; white bass, wipers fair on jigging spoons; crappies poor to fair in rocky areas.

TUTTLE CREEK: Mid 60s, clear, normal. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: crappies fair on jigs in brush.

GLEN ELDER: Low 60s degrees, fairly clear, normal. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: all species poor.

HILLSDALE: 62 degrees, fairly clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: all species poor.

Other area waters

▪ GRAND (OKLA.): 60 degrees, clear, near normal. Outlook: GrandFishingReport.com reports: white bass good on Go-Go Minnows, Rooster Tails off windy points; blue catfish good drifting cut shad.

▪ WHITE RIVER (ARK.): Clear, heavy power generation.. Outlook: Gaston’s White River Resort reports: Fly fishing: trout good on red or pink San Juan worms, pink or white jigs under strike indicators. Spin fishing: trout good on jigs, stickbaits, shad, river slicks.

Hunting

Missouri

FOUNTAIN GROVE: 8,000 (mostly pintails); 150 Canada geese. Seventeen water blinds, 16 walk-ins are in use. Hunting has been poor. On opening weekend (Oct. 31-Nov. 1), 193 hunters shot 265 ducks.

SWAN LAKE: 48,837 ducks (mostly pintails, mallards, and gadwalls); 235 geese (mostly Canadas).

SQUAW CREEK: 71,964 ducks (47,950 pintails, the rest a mix); 900 geese. 3,100 acres of wetlands have water; habitat conditions are good.

NODAWAY VALLEY: 8,775 ducks (mostly gadwalls, pintails). Hunting has been poor to fair. On opening weekend, 78 hunters shot 182 ducks.

BOB BROWN: 7,230 ducks (mostly gadwalls and pintails). Hunting has been fair to good. On opening weekend, 84 hunter shots 259 ducks.

GRAND PASS: 22,000 ducks (mostly pintails, some big ducks). Hunting 16 parties. Hunting has been fair. On opening weekend, 115 hunters took 416 ducks.

FOUR RIVERS: 7,600 ducks (half green-winged and blue-winged teal, 20 percent mallards). Fair habitat conditions, variable food conditions due to earlier flooding.

SCHELL-OSAGE: 34,080 ducks (half teal, rest a mix); 180 Canada geese. All pools have good water, but poor food conditions due to earlier flooding.

MONTROSE: 350 ducks (a mix of species).

SMITHVILLE: Less than 1,000 ducks; geese in the area.

OTTER SLOUGH: 40,000 ducks (half pintails, the rest a mix); 30 Canada geese.

DUCK CREEK: 7,500 ducks (20 percent divers, the rest gadwalls, pintails).

Kansas

CHEYENNE BOTTOMS: 35,000 ducks (mostly teal, gadwalls, shovelers); 30,000 geese (mostly whitefronts). From Oct. 24-30, hunters averaged 2.4 ducks daily.

MARAIS DES CYGNES: Very few waterfowl. Water conditions are improving. Some pumping under way.

NEOSHO: 5,000 ducks . Good water in Pools 1, 2 and 4. Outlook is improving.

FLINT HILLS: Low waterfowl numbers. Habitat is poor due to flooding earlier in year.

PERRY: 1,200 ducks (mostly big ducks); 300 Canada geese. Water in marshes poor to fair. Outlook is poor to fair.

TUTTLE CREEK: 2,500 ducks (85 percent pintails). Habitat is poor due to earlier flooding.

MILFORD: 500 ducks (mostly pintails, teal, shovelers). Habitat conditions poor.

QUIVIRA: 12,500 ducks (mix of species); 1,000 dark geese; 1,000 sandhiil cranes.

MELVERN: 250 teal and pintails. Water is being pumped into marshes.

CLINTON: 1,500 ducks (mostly teal ,wood ducks, gadwalls); 200-300 geese. Water is being pumped into marshes. Good water conditions in marshes.

HILLSDALE: Few waterfowl in the wildlife area.Water conditions fair to good, habitat very good except Brown’s Marsh, which has been drained for maintenance.

KIRWIN: 3,00 ducks (half divers, half dabblers). 3,200 Canada geese; 4,000 sandhill cranes. Hunting has been fair.

GLEN ELDER: 7,000 ducks (3,00 divers, 4,000 big ducks); 6,500 geese (half Canadas, half whitefronts).

McPHERSON WETLANDS: 1,140 ducks (mostly green-winged teal and mallards). Water and habitat conditions fair. Hunting has been fair. For past week, 76 hunters 162 ducks.

JAMESTOWN: 2,500 (mostly green-winged teal, gadwalls); 150 Canada geese. Water conditions good, habitat fair. Hunting has been fair.

Brent’s best bet

The fishing for crappies, bass and walleyes has been good at Norfork Lake. Fishermen are finding success using small jigging spoons in the deep brush.
