Fishing

Missouri

▪ LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 73 degrees, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: crappies good on minnows, jigs 6 to 8 feet down in 12 feet of water in main-lake brush; bass good on soft-plastic baits, jigs, topwater lures behind the docks; catfish very good on cut bait in 25 feet of water off main-lake and secondary points.

▪ SMITHVILLE: 66 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: bass fair to good on spinnerbaits, square-bill crankbaits in coves and along laydowns, stumps, brush in shallows; crappies good on minnows, jigs 7 to 8 feet down in main-lake brush; white bass good on Rooster Tails, small crankbaits along windy points and jetties; channel catfish good on cut bait, night crawlers in shallows on flats.

▪ LONGVIEW: 63 degrees, 38-inch clarity, 1 foot low. Outlook: Longview Lake Marina reports: crappies fair to good on jigs in the main-lake brush and off the marina docks; channel catfish good on chicken liver, night crawlers off the marina docks; walleyes fair.

▪ NORFORK: 71 degrees, murky, 2.4 feet high. Outlook: Bink’s Guide Service reports: bass good on spinnerbaits, crankbaits along banks; stripers fair on Bink’s spoons, live bait in 30 feet of water.

▪ JACOMO: 66 degrees, slightly stained, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: crappies good on jigs, minnows off the docks and in Sailboat Cove; bluegills good on redworms, waxworms off the marina docks; channel catfish poor to fair (a few are being on night crawlers); white bass good on swimbaits, Rooster Tails and on crankbaits trolling; walleyes poor to fair (a few are being caught on crankbaits trolling).

▪ POMME DE TERRE: 68 degrees, fairly clear, normal. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: bass good on spinnerbaits, buzzbaits in the shallows in the coves; crappies poor to fair (a few are being caught on jigs, minnows in 10 feet of water in the brush); muskies fair to good on bucktails, shallow-running crankbaits in the shallows.

▪ TABLE ROCK: 72 degrees, stained, 3.6 feet low. Outlook: White River Lodge reports: bass fair on topwater lures (prop baits, frogs, and walking baits are working best).

▪ ▪ TRUMAN: 68 degrees, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Cody’s Bait and Tackle reports: white bass fair on jigging spoons, jigs, Road Runners off windy points; catfish good on cut shad; crappies fair to good on minnows, jigs in Bucksaw area. Below the dam: crappies fair; hybrids poor to fair.

▪ BLUE SPRINGS: High 60s, clearing, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: crappies fair to good (but mostly small) on jigs, minnows off the marina docks and in main-lake brush; hybrids good on swimbaits near the Blow Hole; bluegills good on redworms, waxworms; largemouth bass fair to good on shad imitations, minnows.

▪ BULL SHOALS: 70 degrees, clear, 2.8 feet high. Outlook: 125 Marina reports: smallmouth, largemouth bass good on topwater lures early and late or on jigging spoons in 20 feet of water along the bluffs during the day; catfish fair lakewide.

▪ REED AREA: 60 degrees, clear, full pool. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: black bass fair on plastic baits near brush; channel catfish fair on cut bait, chicken liver; crappies fair on tube jigs near brush; bluegills and redear sunfish fair on worms under bobbers in shady areas.

▪ TANEYCOMO: Clear, low power generation. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: trout fair drifting night crawlers or PowerBait below Fall Creek. Trophy area: trout fair on midges, cracklebacks and caddis flies.

STOCKTON: 65 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: crappies poor to fair (a few are being caught on jigs in 10 to 15 feet of water in brush).

Kansas

▪ PERRY: 63 degrees, fairly clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Don and Tom’s Bait and Tackle reports: white bass good on Minis on the main lake; saugers fair on jigs with night crawlers on flats; smallmouth bass poor to fair in rocky areas; catfish fair lakewide.

▪ WILSON: 66 degrees, clear, 10 feet low. Outlook: Knothead’s reports: stripers good on slab spoons, live bait in 20 feet of water or topwater lures where fish are surfacing; smallmouth bass good on crankbaits, spinnerbaits in the coves; walleyes fair on jigs with night crawlers along rocky banks.

CLINTON: 67 degrees, clear, 1 1/2 feet high. Outlook: Clinton Lake Marina reports: white bass, wipers good on white jigs with pink heads off windy points; crappies poor to fair on jigs off docks.

▪ WYANDOTTE: 65 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Wyandotte Boats reports: wipers good trolling crankbaits on the main lake; bass good on plastic bait along weed edges, rocky areas; crappies fair on minnows in 12 to 15 feet of water on the main lake; channel catfish good on minnows in the shallows.

▪ POMONA: High 60s, stained,  1/2 -foot low. Outlook: Lighthouse Bay Marina reports: white bass excellent on spinners, jigs, Road Runners on the main lake; crappies fair on jigs in 6 to 8 feet of water off docks and in main-lake brush.

▪ MELVERN: 67 degrees, fairly clear,  1/2 -foot low. Outlook: Melvern Lake Marina reports: white bass fair on the main lake.

▪ MILFORD: High 60s, clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: wipers good on Wiper Pro spoons off windy points; crappies fair on jigs in 5 to 15 feet of water in brush.

▪ LA CYGNE: High 70s on the main lake, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Linn County Park reports: bass fair on spinnerbaits, plastic baits in the shallows; white bass good (but small) on white jigs, Rooster Tails at the hot-water outlet.

▪ KILL CREEK: 63 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: catfish fair on liver near the marina; crappies fair early and late on jigs, minnows in the flooded timber and off the dock; bass fair on plastic baits, spinnerbaits on the south side.

▪ SHAWNEE MISSION: 65 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: crappies fair early and late on minnows in the shallows; bass fair early and late on spinnerbaits, plastic baits.

▪ COFFEY COUNTY: 80 degrees midlake, clear, normal. Outlook: Coffey County reports: smallmouth bass fair to good on on plastic baits along the riprap.

▪ HILLSDALE: 64 degrees, fairly clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: crappies fair on jigs in brush in 10 to 15 feet of water; channel catfish good on cut bait, live bait on the flats.

▪ EL DORADO: 65 degrees, fairly clear, normal. Outlook: Wildlife, Parks and Tourism reports: wipers good on crankbaits, spoons, jigs in 15 to 18 feet of water; white bass fair to good on crankbaits, jigs, spinners in the feeder creeks; crappies fair on jigs in 10 to 12 feet of water along ledges, channel dropoffs; walleyes good on shad imitations in 6 to 20 feet of water; channel catfish fair to good on shad off points.

▪ TUTTLE CREEK: High 60s, murky, normal. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: crappies fair in 5 to 15 feet of water in brush; white bass fair (fish are schooling and following baitfish).

▪ GLEN ELDER: 68 degrees, fairly clear, normal. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: white bass fair on small spinners, slab spoons along the dam and on the west end; catfish fair in chum holes.

Other area waters

▪ GRAND (OKLA.): 70 degrees, clear,  1/2 -foot high. Outlook: GrandFishingReport.com reports: white bass good on Go-Go Minnows, Rooster Tails off windy points in Honey Creek and Elk Creek arms; crappies good on Go-Go Minnows, Bobby Garland jigs in 10 feet of water in the brush and along docks; catfish good on rod and reel and juglines with cut bait.

▪ WHITE RIVER (ARK.): Clear, five units running most of the day. Outlook: Gaston’s White River Resort reports: Fly fishing: trout good on red or pink San Juan worms, pink bead-head jigs, egg flies (peach and steelhead orange have been the best colors. Spin fishing: trout good on redworms, night crawlers, Glow Worms,  1/8 -th ounce black or brown jigs.

Hunting

Missouri

▪ FOUNTAIN GROVE: 4,000 ducks (mostly teal and pintails); 150 resident Canada geese.

▪ SWAN LAKE: 5,300 ducks (mostly teal, mallards); 75 Canada geese.

▪ SQUAW CREEK: 28,900 ducks (mostly teal, pintails); 190 Canada geese.

▪ NODAWAY VALLEY: 232 ducks (mostly pintails, teal).

▪ BOB BROWN: 4,500 ducks (mostly pintails, teal).

▪ GRAND PASS: 8,500 ducks (mostly teal, pintails).

▪ FOUR RIVERS: 1,079 ducks (mostly teal).

▪ SCHELL-OSAGE: 2,500 ducks (mix of species).

▪ MONTROSE: 25 ducks (mix of species ).

▪ SMITHVILLE: 1,000 ducks (mostly pintails, teal). 500 resident Canada geese.

▪ OTTER SLOUGH: 16,700 ducks (mostly pintails, teal); 75 Canada geese.

▪ DUCK CREEK: 360 ducks (mostly pintails).

Kansas

▪ CHEYENNE BOTTOMS: 30,000 ducks (mostly blue-winged teal, shovelers, mallards). Some white-fronted geese now arriving. Water, habitat conditions are fair to good. Hunting has been fair to good. Hunters averaged 3.3 ducks per man daily for last week.

▪ MARAIS DES CYGNES: Very few waterfowl. Very little huntable water. Some pumping under way.

▪ NEOSHO: 100 teal. Very little huntable water. Poor conditions. Some pumping under way.

▪ FLINT HILLS: 450 ducks (mostly teal); 65 dark geese. Habitat is poor due to flooding earlier in year.

▪ PERRY: 1,500 ducks (mostly teal); no geese. Hunting outlook is poor to fair. Habitat is poor to fair due to earlier flooding.

▪ TUTTLE CREEK: 500 ducks (mostly teal and pintails). Habitat is poor due to earlier flooding.

▪ MILFORD: Low ducks numbers. Flooding caused poor habtiat conditions.

▪ QUIVIRA: Less than 15,000 ducks (mix of species); a few hundred white-fronted geese; 1,500 sandhill cranes. Two whooping cranes using the refuge. If they are still there Saturday, refuge won’t be open to youth duck season.

▪ MELVERN: Low numbers of waterfowl. Water is being pumped into marshes.

▪ CLINTON: 750 ducks (mostly teal, wood ducks); 200 to 300 Canada geese. Water is being pumped into marshes. Good water conditions in marshes.

▪ HILLSDALE: Few waterfowl in the wildlife area.Water conditions fair to good, habitat very good except Brown’s Marsh, which has been drained for maintenance.

▪ KIRWIN: Low waterfowl numbers.

▪ GLEN ELDER: 3,000 ducks (60 percent divers); 800 resident Canada geese. Fair hunting outlook.

▪ McPHERSON WETLANDS: 1,300 ducks (40 percent teal, the rest a mix); 80 white-fronted geese. Water is fair to good, habitat is very good. Hunting has bene fair to good. For first week of season, 180 hunters took 333 ducks.

▪ JAMESTOWN: 1,300 ducks (mostly teal, pintails, shovelers). Water conditions are good, habitat is fair.

Brent’s best bet

The fall fishing at Lake of the Ozarks is picking up. The crappies are biting this week, with keeper fish being caught in main-lake brush. Bass also are hitting in the shallows, and the catfish action has been very good.
