Fishing report for Sept. 24

Missouri

▪ NORFORK: 79 degrees, stained, 8.8 feet high. Outlook: Bink’s Guide Service reports: walleyes stripers, bass, crappies, catfish good on  1/2 ounce Bink’s Spoons in 30 feet of water or trolling Alabama rigs.

▪ SMITHVILLE: 74 degrees, clear,  1/2 -foot high. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: bass fair on jigs, Brush Hogs square-bill crankbaits in shallows; crappies good on jigs, minnows in 10 feet of water in main-lake brush; white bass good on Rat-L-Traps, Rooster Tails off windy points; catfish good on a variety of baits in 6 to 8 feet of water in the back of coves.

▪ STOCKTON: 75 degrees, clear, 1.4 feet high. Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: crappies good on minnows, jigs in 20 feet of water in the brush; walleyes very good on bottom bouncers, night crawler harness in 10 feet of water on the flats; bass fair on crankbaits in shallows off secondary points; catfish fair on shad on the flats; white bass good where surfacing.

▪ TRUMAN: 74, clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Steve Blake Guide Service reports: crappies fair on jigs in 8 to 14 feet of water in the brush; white bass good on jigging spoons on the humps and KK Island; largemouth bass fair on jig and pig, plastic baits. Cody’s Bait and Tackle reports: hybrids very good on fresh shad in 14 to 17 feet of water; catfish very good on fresh shad in 15 feet of water on the flats. Below the dam: crappies poor to fair (a few are being caught on jigs, minnows); catfish poor to fair (a few are being caught on fresh shad).

▪ JACOMO: Mid-70s, clear, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: white bass very good on Roster Tails, jigs near the banks in early morning; channel catfish good on worms in the mouths of coves and off the boat docks; flathead catfish good at dusk on shad, cut bait in the coves and on the flats; crappies fair on minnows off the docks; in main-lake bluegills good on wax worms, crickets.

▪ BULL SHOALS: 78 degrees, clear, 15.9 feet high. Outlook: 125 Marina reports: smallmouth, largemouth bass good on  3/4 ounce jigging spoons in 20 feet of water and on topwater lures early and late; catfish good on trotlines with cut bait, stinkbait.

▪ TABLE ROCK: 78 degrees, stained, near normal. Outlook: White River Lodge reports: smallmouth bass excellent early on crankbaits in 5 feet of water and during the day on jigs with night crawlers in 15 feet of water along chunk-rock banks; Kentucky bass very good on drop-shot rigs with purple finesse worms or night crawlers in 22 to 30 feet of water on the main-lake flats.

▪ LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 77 degrees, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: crappies fair on minnows, jigs in 6 to 10 feet of water along bluff banks and laydowns; bass fair on large plastic worm jigs, minnows in main-lake brush.

▪ TANEYCOMO: Clear, two to four units running. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: Trophy Area: trout good on scuds, egg flies. Below Fall Creek: trout good drifting night crawlers or on Trout Magnets. Fishermen are finding most success on 2-pound test line.

▪ BLUE SPRINGS: Mid-70s, clearing, near normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: channel catfish very good on dip bait, hot dogs off the docks and in the coves; bluegills good early on crickets, waxworms off docks and in rocky areas; flathead catfish fair on cut bait, night crawlers near the Blow Hole and on flats; hybrids good on shad guts near the Blow Hole and trolling crankbaits along the dam; largemouth bass good early on buzzbaits; crappies fair on small jigs off the docks.

▪ REED AREA: 70 degrees, clear, full pool. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: largemouth bass good on plastic worms in the brush; channel catfish fair on cut bait, liver; crappies fair on tube jigs in the brush; bluegills, redear sunfish good on red worms under a bobber in shady areas.

▪ LONGVIEW: 75 degrees, 41-inch clarity, normal. Outlook: Longview Lake Marina reports: crappies good on minnows, jigs off the marina docks and in the timber; bass fair on crankbaits.

▪ POMME DE TERRE: 78 degrees, fairly clear,  1/2 foot high. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: bass fair to good on deep-running crankbaits, jigging spoons 15 feet down in 40 feet of water; white bass fair where fish are surfacing in evening; crappies fair on minnows in 15 to 20 feet in brush; muskies good on bucktails, big crankbaits in the shallows.

Kansas

▪ GLEN ELDER: Mid-70s, clear, normal. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: walleyes good on jigs with night crawlers along dropoffs; white bass, wipers good trolling crankbaits; catfish good on dip bait in chum holes.

▪ MELVERN: 74 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Melvern Lake Marina reports: smallmouth, largemouth good on crankbaits, spinners along face of the dam; white bass good on spinners off windy points; catfish fair to good on worms, jigs off the marina docks and on the main lake.

▪ WILSON: Mid-70s, clear, 10 feet low. Outlook: Knotheads reports: largemouth, smallmouth bass good on crankbaits in rocky areas and along dropoffs; stripers good on live bait, crankbaits trolled on the mainlake; catfish fair.

▪ PERRY: 72 degrees, clear, 2 feet high. Outlook: Don and Tom’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies fair to good (but mostly small) on minnows, jigs near Slough Creek bridge; white bass fair to good on Bubbas; catfish good drifting cut shad near Old Town area.

▪ MILFORD: 78 degrees, clear, 2 feet high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: wipers very good on shad, jigging spoons and on large topwater lures on overcast days; catfish fair on lakewide.

▪ WYANDOTTE: 74 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Wildlife, Parks and Tourism reports: wipers good on shad imitations off main-lake points; bluegills good on crickets, worms; channel catfish good on liver, live bait off main-lake points; smallmouth bass good on plastic finesse baits, crankbaits in rocky areas; largemouth bass fair on finesse baits in shallows.

▪ POMONA: low 70s, fairly clear, normal. Outlook: Lighthouse Bay Marina reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows in the brush in 12 feet of water; walleyes fair to good on night crawlers on the flats; bass good on live bait, jigs off the docks; channel catfish fair to good on a variety of baits lakewide.

▪ KILL CREEK: 72 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: catfish good on night crawlers, liver near the marina; bass fair on plastic baits, spinnerbaits on the south side; crappies fair in the evening on minnows near the flooded timber and off the dock.

▪ SHAWNEE MISSION: 74 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: catfish good early and late on liver, stinkbait along the banks; bass fair early on spinnerbaits, plastic baits; crappies fair on minnows off the docks.

▪ CLINTON: Mid-70s, clear, murky, 2  1/2 feet high. Outlook: Clinton Lake Marina reports: crappies fair (but small) on jigs, minnows off dock and on main lake.

▪ TUTTLE CREEK: Mid-70s, murky, near normal. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: white bass fair on Bubbas, Double W spoons in 10 to 15 feet of water off windy points and structure.

▪ COFFEY COUNTY: 90 degrees at the hot-water outlet, 78 degrees midlake, clear, normal. Outlook: Coffey County reports: smallmouth bass good on plastic baits along the riprap.

▪ LA CYGNE: 80s on the main lake, clear, normal. Outlook: Linn County Park reports: catfish poor to fair.

▪ HILLSDALE: High 70s, murky, 1 1/2 feet high. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: all species poor.

Other area waters

▪ GRAND (OKLA.): 75 degrees, clear,  1/2 foot high. Outlook: GrandFishingReport.com reports: white bass good on Go-Go Minnows, Rooster Tails off windy points; crappies fair to good on Crappie Kickers in 10 to 15 feet of water in the brush; catfish good drifting cut shad near the river channel.

▪ WHITE RIVER (ARK.): Clear, variable power generation. Outlook: Gaston’s White River Resort reports: fly fishing: trout good on San Juan worms, sculpin patterns, streamers, white or black jigs. Spin fishing: trout good on  1/8 -ounce white or gray-white jigs; stickbaits, PowerBait.

Brent’s best bet

The falling water temperatures have the fish on the move at Glen Elder Reservoir in north-central Kansas. The big news is that the walleyes are starting to bite. White bass and wipers also are being caught on crankbaits trolled on flats, and catfish are being caught in the chum holes.
