Fishing

Missouri

▪ STOCKTON: 65 degrees, clear, 3 feet high. Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: crappies fair early and late on jigs, minnows along channel drop-offs or bluffs; walleyes fair on jigs with night crawlers in 8 to 12 feet of water on flats and off points; bass good on squarebill crankbaits, spinnerbaits in 3 to 5 feet of water in back of creeks; white bass excellent on a variety of lures in 10 to 20 feet of water off windy points; walleyes very good (but small) on jigs with night crawlers off shallow points.

▪ BULL SHOALS: high 60s, clear, 5 feet low. Outlook: White River Lodge reports: white bass, stripers excellent on topwater lures early near K-Dock area. 125 Marina reports: largemouth bass fair to good on topwater lures along rocky banks; smallmouths poor to fair on soft-plastic baits in 20 feet of water; catfish poor to fair.

▪ TABLE ROCK: 71 degrees, clear, 3 feet low. Outlook: White River Lodge reports: bass good on 3/8-ounce pumpkin-colored football jigs with twin tail trailers in 15 to 25 feet of water off long points and on flats.

▪ SMITHVILLE: 60 degrees, fairly clear, slightly high. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies good on jigs, minnows in 10 to 12 feet of water in main-lake brush; black bass fair to good on spinnerbaits, squarebill crankbaits in the shallows; white bass good on Alabama rigs with Sassy Shad, or Rat-L-Traps off main-lake points.

▪ BLUE SPRINGS: 64 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: hybrids good on Lucky Strike jigs near the bridge; channel catfish good on cut shad along the dam; crappies fair on minnows in rocky or brushy areas.

▪ TRUMAN: 60 degrees, muddy, 1 foot high. Outlook: Bucksaw Marina reports: bass good on spinnerbaits during day and buzzbaits early; catfish fair on cut shad in 11 to 13 feet of water on the flats; white bass fair to good on small crankbaits, jigging spoons, Road Runners off windy points near dam; crappies poor to fair (a few are being caught on jigs, minnows 10 to 12 feet down in 15 feet of water in the creeks).

▪ JACOMO: 64 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: crappies fair on minnows, bright-colored jigs in main-lake brush; channel catfish good on shad, bluegill heads on the flats at night; flathead catfish fair to good on live shad or goldfish early in the morning; bluegills good on night crawlers, crickets, wax worms; bass fair on large minnows, shad imitations on humps.

▪ TANEYCOMO: 49 degrees, clear, sporadic power generation. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: Trophy Area: brown trout good at night on streamers. Below Fall Creek: trout very good on pink and white jigs; PowerBait, air-inflated night crawlers.

▪ LONGVIEW: 60 degrees, 53-inch clarity, normal. Outlook: Longview Lake Marina reports: crappies fair to good on jigs, minnows off the marina docks; catfish good on liver on the main lake and off the marina docks; bass fair on spinnerbaits, crankbaits in the shallows.

▪ REED AREA: 58 degrees, clear, full pool. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: crappies good on jigs under bobbers over the shallow brush piles; black bass fair on crankbaits; channel catfish fair on a variety of baits.

▪ POMME DE TERRE: 66 degrees, clear, 21/4 feet high. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: crappies fair to good on minnows 6 to 10 feet down in 20 feet of water in brush; bass fair to good on topwater lures in the shallows on Rat-L-Traps, crankbaits; muskies fair to good on crankbaits in the shallows.

▪ LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 64 degrees, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: crappies poor to fair (a few are being caught on jigs, minnows in 25 to 30 feet of water along condo docks); bass fair to good early and late on Zara Spooks, buzzbaits along shady banks.

▪ NORFORK: 69 degrees, off-color, 2 feet low. Outlook: Bink’s Guide Service reports: all species poor.

Kansas

▪ MELVERN: 63 degrees, murky, 1 foot low. Outlook: Melvern Marina reports: crappies good on minnows, jigs in 8 to 10 feet of water in the brush; smallmouth bass very good on crankbaits, plastic baits in 6 to 8 feet of water; white bass good on jigs, Rooster Tails on the main lake; catfish fair on shad sides, liver.

▪ LA CYGNE: High 70s midlake, clear, normal. Outlook: Linn County Parks: crappies good along dam; white bass, wipers good surfacing near the outlet; catfish good lakewide.

▪ WILSON: High 60s, clear, 71/2 feet low. Outlook: Knothead’s reports: stripers very good on black salties, jigging spoons in Nelson’s Cove and off Pelican Point; smallmouth bass good on live bait, crankbaits in rocky coves; catfish good lakewide.

▪ MILFORD: 65 degrees, clear, 2 feet high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: white bass, wipers good on spoons, Bubbas in 15 feet of water along drop-offs on the north end; white bass also fair on jigs in the rocky shallows.

▪ WYANDOTTE: 61 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Wyandotte Marina reports: bass good on crankbaits, plastic baits in the shallows; crappies good at night on jigs in the main-lake brush; bluegills good on mealworms off the docks.

▪ GLEN ELDER: mid-60s, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: white bass poor to fair (a few are being caught on jigging spoons in the Granite Creek and Rock creek arms and along the causeway).

▪ COFFEY COUNTY: 85 degrees on the main lake, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Coffey County reports: bank fishing has been good. White bass good on white grubs; smallmouth bass fair to good on shad imitations; catfish fair.

▪ POMONA: Mid-60s, murky, 1 foot low. Outlook: Lighthouse Bay Marina reports: crappies fair to good on jigs, minnows off docks; catfish good on shad, cut bait lakewide.

▪ PERRY: 60 degrees, clear, 2 feet high. Outlook: Bait Hut reports: white bass very good on Bubbas, Rooster Tails on the main lake; crappies fair to good on minnows in 15 feet of water in brush; channel catfish poor to fair.

▪ HILLSDALE: 62 degrees, fairly clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: crappies fair on minnows in 6 to 10 feet of water in brush and off docks; catfish poor to fair on a variety of baits lakewide.

▪ SHAWNEE MISSION: 64 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: trout good on flies, live bait.

▪ KILL CREEK: Mid-60s, 1- to 2-foot clarity, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: trout good on flies, live bait.

▪ HERITAGE: Mid-60s, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: trout good on a variety of baits.

▪ TUTTLE CREEK: 65 degrees, muddy, 41/2 feet high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: all species poor.

Other area waters

▪ GRAND (Okla.): 62 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Guide Rusty Pritchard reports: blue catfish very good on cut shad drifted in 35 to 45 feet of water in the Honey Creek area; crappies good on 1-inch Go-Go Minnows in brush in 10 to 15 feet of water; white bass good on 2-inch Go-Go Minnows in Spring River and off windy points.

▪ WHITE RIVER (Ark.): Clear, sporadic power generation. Outlook: Gaston’s White River Resort reports: Fly fishing: trout excellent on pearl or ruby midges, sow bugs in low water and on marabou jigs and egg patterns when there is current. Spin fishing: trout excellent on Berkley Power Worms with one yellow PowerBait egg, redworms, night crawlers, spoons.

▪ BEAVER LAKE (Ark.): 65 degrees, clear, low. Outlook: Bailey’s Guide Service reports: stripers fair trolling live shad up to 30 feet deep; walleyes, stripers fair on 1-ounce Bink’s spoons worked through shad schools.

Hunting

Missouri

▪ FOUNTAIN GROVE: 5,000 ducks (mostly pintails and shovelers); 70 Canada geese. Hunting spots for 23 water blinds, 12 walk-in spots. On Oct. 25, opening day, 109 hunters shot 291 ducks.

▪ SQUAW CREEK: 8,400 ducks (half teal, the rest a mix of species); 100 geese. Water and habitat conditions good.

▪ SWAN LAKE: 8,750 ducks (60 percent pintails). Good water, habitat conditions.

▪ BOB BROWN: 7,000 ducks (80 percent pintails). Heavy hunting pressure. Hunting has been good. On Saturday and Sunday, 71 hunters shot 248 ducks. Good water and habitat.

▪ NODAWAY VALLEY: 500 ducks (a mix of early migrants). Heavy hunting pressure. On Saturday and Sunday, 68 hunters shot 225 ducks.

▪ GRAND PASS: 5,400 ducks (early migrants). Fifteen positions are being hunted. On Saturday and Sunday, 106 hunters shot 366 ducks.

▪ FOUR RIVERS: 2,000 ducks (half teal). Good food, habitat and water.

▪ SCHELL-OSAGE: Low waterfowl totals. Good water and habitat.

▪ SMITHVILLE: 7,000 ducks (mostly teal and divers). Marshes have good water.

▪ MONTROSE: 200 ducks (60 percent teal).

▪ DUCK CREEK: 2,290 ducks (mostly early migrants).

▪ OTTER SLOUGH: 9,400 ducks (mostly early migrants); 130 dark geese.

Kansas

▪ CHEYENNE BOTTOMS: 80,000 ducks (mostly blue-winged teal). Water conditions good; habitat, food conditions are very good. Hunting has been only fair because of mild weather.

▪ MARAIS DES CYGNES: 2,500 ducks (mostly teal and wood ducks). Habitat conditions are good to very good.

▪ QUIVIRA: 38,000 ducks (mostly pintails, redheads, widgeons); 960 geese (mostly whitefronts).

▪ MILFORD: 336 ducks (mostly early migrants). Water, habitat conditions very good.

▪ PERRY: 250 ducks (60 percent teal). Habitat is best in years. Outlook for opener is poor to fair because of delayed migrations.

▪ TUTTLE CREEK: 300 to 400 ducks (teal, shovelers, wood ducks). Lake is high; marshes have fair to good water.

▪ HILLSDALE: Low waterfowl numbers. Marshes are in poor to fair condition. Hunting outlook is poor.

▪ GLEN ELDER: 1,700 ducks (60 percent teal and mallards); no geese. Lake is 2 feet low. Habitat conditions are poor. Little flooded vegetation.

▪ NEOSHO: 3,500 ducks; 100 Canada geese. Shallow water and tall vegetation.

▪ CLINTON: Low waterfowl numbers. Limited water in the wildlife area.

▪ McPHERSON VALLEY WETLANDS: 2,000 ducks (mostly teal, pintails). All pools have huntable water. Habitat conditions very good.

▪ JAMESTOWN: 2,300 ducks (mostly teal). Excellent water, habitat. Hunting has been fair.

Brent’s best bet

The fall fishing is improving at Melvern Lake in eastern Kansas. Marina operators rate the fishing as very good for smallmouth bass, and good for white bass and crappies.
