Fishing report for Aug. 27

Missouri

▪ SMITHVILLE: 78 degrees, clear, one-half-foot high. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies good on minnows in main-lake brush; bass good on creature baits in shallows off points; channel catfish good on a variety of baits in the shallows in coves; white bass fair on jigging spoons off main-lake points.

▪ TRUMAN: 80 degrees, murky on the upper end, clear at the dam, 1.6 feet high. Outlook: Cody’s Bait and Tackle reports: hybrids good on live shad in 20 to 28 feet of water on flats; catfish good on shallow flats drifting shad. Below the dam: whites, hybrids fair to good on jigs, minnows; catfish fair on minnows, shad.

▪ NORFORK: 83 degrees, stained 13.5 feet high. Outlook: Bink’s Guide Service reports: walleyes excellent, smallmouth bass fair on white one-half ounce Bink’s Spoons in 30 feet of water or less; stripers good on 1-ounce white Bink’s Spoons in 30 to 70 feet of water on the main lake.

▪ JACOMO: High 70s, clearing, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: channel catfish very good on night crawlers off the docks in the evening and on goldfish, minnows in the mouths of the coves; bluegills good on crickets, redworms; bass fair on topwater lures early.

▪ STOCKTON: 82 degrees, clear, 21/2 feet high. Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: crappies fair on minnows in 25 feet of water in brush; bass poor to fair (a few are being caught on large plastic worms in brush piles); walleyes fair on bottom bouncers in 13 to 17 feet of water on the flats; catfish very good on fresh shad in 12 to 17 feet of water on flats; white bass good on Rooster Tails where fish are surfacing in evening.

▪ BULL SHOALS: 86 degrees, clear, 25 feet high. Outlook: 125 Marina reports: bass fair on jigging spoons in 20 feet of water; catfish good on limb lines with minnows, cut bait right under the surface.

▪ TANEYCOMO: Clear, three units running all day. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: Trophy Area; trout good on white marabou jigs, No. 14 scuds. Below Fall Creek: trout fair drifting night crawlers.

▪ BLUE SPRINGS: High 70s, clearing, near normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: bluegills very good on crickets wax worms off the docks; channel catfish fair on liver, night crawlers in the dam area and the old swim beach; bass fair early on Rat-L-Traps, crankbaits.

▪ REED AREA: 74 degrees, clear, full pool. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: largemouth bass fair early and late on a variety of baits; bluegills, redear sunfish good on red worms under a bobber in shady areas; catfish fair on cut bait, chicken liver 2 feet under a bobber; crappies fair on tube jigs near brush piles.

▪ LONGVIEW: 76 degrees, 37-inch clarity, normal. Outlook: Longview Lake Marina reports: crappies fair (but small) on jigs off the marina docks.

▪ LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 83 degrees, fairly clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: crappies poor to fair (a few are being caught on minnows in 18 feet of water in main-lake brush); bass fair on Brush Hogs, jigs, plastic worms in 20 feet of water in brush; catfish poor to fair on trotlines.

▪ TABLE ROCK: 81 degrees, stained, 3 feet high. Outlook: White River Lodge reports: catfish poor to fair on shad sides, panfish; bluegills fair on crickets in 15 to 22 feet of water on main-lake points, flats; bass poor to fair early on green-pumpkin jigs in 12 to 25 feet of water in areas with chunk rock.

▪ POMME DE TERRE: 80 degrees, fairly clear, normal. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: all species poor.

Kansas

▪ MELVERN: 78 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Melvern Lake Marina reports: smallmouth, largemouth bass very good on crankbaits along banks; crappies good on minnows in 25 feet of water in brush.

▪ WYANDOTTE: 80 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Wyandotte Marina reports: bass very good early and late on plastic baits in the weeds; channel catfish fair at night on worms, liver, shad, prepared baits; bluegills good on crickets, red worms, wax worms; hybrids fair trolling crankbaits on the main lake.

▪ HILLSDALE: 79 degrees, fairly clear, normal. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: bass fair on topwater lures early along banks; crappies fair to good on minnows in 4 to 8 feet of water in the brush; catfish good on a variety of baits lakewide.

▪ MILFORD: Low 80s, fairly clear, 2 feet high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: wipers good on Bubbas, slab spoons where fish are surfacing early or in 25 feet of water during the day; catfish good on shad.

▪ EL DORADO: 79 degrees, murky, one-half foot high. Outlook: Wildlife, Parks and Tourism reports: white bass, wipers fair late in the day where fish are surfacing off windy points; crappies fair on jigs 8 feet down in 12 feet of water in main-lake brush.

▪ POMONA: 78 degrees, murky, near normal. Outlook: Lighthouse Bay Marina reports: crappies fair on minnows in 12 feet of water in brush; walleyes poor to fair on crankbaits on flats in 110-mile and Wolf Creek arms; channel catfish good on a variety of baits.

▪ WILSON: 78 degrees, clear, 9 feet low. Outlook: Knothead’s reports: stripers poor to fair on live shad, black salties in deep water on the main lake; catfish good on goldfish, minnows.

▪ KILL CREEK: 82 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: catfish good on liver near the marina; bass fair on plastic baits, spinnerbaits on the south side; crappies fair on jigs, minnows in the flooded timber.

▪ PERRY: 82 degrees, clear, 11/2 feet high. Outlook: Don and Tom’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies fair on minnows, jigs in 9 to 18 feet of water in timber and along bridges in Slough Creek and Rock Creek; white bass good on Bubbas, topwater lures early and late; catfish good drifting shad in 20 to 25 feet of water in the old Hog Trough area.

▪ SHAWNEE MISSION: High 70s, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: catfish fair on cut bait, stinkbait in the south cove and along the north shore; bass fair early on plastic baits, spinnerbaits along the north shore; panfish fair off the docks and along the dam.

▪ COFFEY COUNTY: 93 degrees mid-lake, clear, normal. Outlook: Coffey County reports: smallmouth bass fair on plastic baits, crankbaits.

▪ CLINTON: 78 degrees, murky, 2 feet high. Outlook: Clinton Marina reports: channel catfish fair on a variety of baits lakewide.

▪ GLEN ELDER: 78 degrees, clear, 2 feet high. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: walleyes fair on jigs with night crawlers along dropoffs; white bass fair where surfacing; catfish good on dip baits in chum holes.

▪ TUTTLE CREEK: Low 80s, clearing, near normal. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: white bass fair on spoons; catfish good on a variety of baits.

▪ LA CYGNE: 95 degrees in the hot-water outlet, high 80s on the main lake, clear, normal. Outlook: Linn County Park reports: bass poor to fair at dawn on a variety of baits.

Other area waters

▪ GRAND (OKLA.): 81 degrees, murky, 4 feet high. Outlook: GrandFishingReport.com reports: white bass good in the evening on Go Go Minnows, Rooster Tails off windy points; black bass fair on jigs, plastics off points; catfish good drifting shad or using juglines with shad; crappies fair but mostly small in main-lake brush and along docks.

▪ WHITE RIVER (ARK.): Clear, variable power generation. Outlook: Gaston’s White River Resort reports: brown trout good on suspending stickbaits, brown jigs, sculpins; rainbow trout good on one-eighth-ounce brown, white or black jigs PowerBait, worms. Fly fishermen have been catching trout on pink or red San Juan worms.

Brent’s best bet

Melvern and Wyandotte lakes are making news this week with their excellent bass fishing. At Melvern, most of the fish being caught are smallmouths. At Wyandotte, largemouth bass are the dominant species.
