Fishing report for Oct. 9

Missouri

▪ NORFORK: 75 degrees, murky, 2 feet low. Outlook: Lou Gabric of Hummingbird Hideaway Resort reports: hybrids very good on jigging spoons along bluff points early in the morning; largemouth, Kentucky bass very good on jigging spoons on main-lake humps and jig-and-pigs along bluffs; white bass fair to good on Kastmasters, topwater lures on shallow sandy flats.

▪ SMITHVILLE: 65 degrees, slightly stained, one-half foot high. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies very good on jigs, minnows in 10 to 12 feet of water in the brush in coves and cuts; black bass good on spinnerbaits, jigs in the shallows in coves; white bass good on Pepper Spoons, small Rat-L-Traps, Road Runners off windy main-lake points; channel catfish fair.

▪ TRUMAN: 72 degrees, clear, one-half foot high. Outlook: Bucksaw Marina reports: crappies fair on minnows in 12 to 15 feet of water in creeks; bass poor to fair (a few are being caught on white spinnerbaits off secondary points); catfish fair drifting with cut shad, panfish on the flats. Below the dam: Cody’s Bait and Tackle reports: catfish fair drifting shad in 15 to 20 feet of water. Below the dam: crappies poor to fair on minnows.

▪ JACOMO: 68 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: crappies good on minnows off the marina docks and handicap dock; channel catfish good on minnows during day and on liver, cut shad, stink bait at night off the points and on flats; bluegills very good on crickets, wax worms in rocky areas.

▪ TABLE ROCK: 73 degrees, clear, 7 feet low. Outlook: White River Lodge reports: bass excellent on Flutter Spoons, drop-shot rigs with small plastic worms in 25 feet of water along bluff ends, and on football jigs along 45-degree rocky banks.

▪ LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 72 degrees, stained, 1 1/2 feet low. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: crappies fair to good on minnows, jigs in 10 to 12 feet of water in brush; bass fair to good on jigs, plastic worms, crankbaits in 4 to 14 feet of water off windy points.

▪ TANEYCOMO: Very clear, power generation from 1 to 9 p.m. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: Trophy Area: trout fair on red or P&P (primrose and pearl) zebra midges in 5 to 6 feet of water. Below Fall Creek: trout fair on night crawlers, Trout Magnets below a float.

▪ LONGVIEW: 71 degrees, 53-inch clarity, normal. Outlook: Longview Lake Marina reports: catfish good on minnows off the marina docks; crappies fair on jigs, minnows off the marina docks; black bass good on plastic baits in the flooded vegetation.

▪ STOCKTON: 71 degrees, clear, 1 1/2 feet high. Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows in 10 to 20 feet of water on drop-offs along river channels; walleyes good on jigs with night crawlers in 6 to 10 feet of water on flats and off long points; bass fair to good on squarebill crankbaits, spinnerbaits in 3 to 7 feet of water.

▪ BLUE SPRINGS: 67 degrees, clear, near normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: white bass fair early on Pepper Spoons, crankbaits where fish are surfacing; channel catfish fair on worms, cut shad near the dam; bass fair to good on crankbaits; bluegills good on crickets, redworms from the bank.

▪ BULL SHOALS: 71 degrees, clear, 6 feet low. Outlook: 125 Marina reports: largemouth bass fair to good on topwater lures along rocky banks; smallmouths poor to fair on soft-plastic baits in 20 feet of water; catfish poor to fair.

▪ REED AREA: 65 degrees, clear, full pool. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: black bass fair on plastic worms, jig-and-pigs near weed lines and brush piles; channel catfish poor to fair (a few are being caught on chicken liver, cut bait); crappies fair on tube jigs, minnows near brush and weeds; bluegills poor to fair (a few are being caught on worms, small jigs under bobbers).

▪ POMME DE TERRE: 72 degrees, clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: bass, walleyes, crappies poor to fair on minnow imitations in shallows; muskies fair on bucktails, crankbaits.

Kansas

▪ MELVERN: 68 degrees, clear, one-half foot low. Outlook: Melvern Marina reports: crappies very good on minnows, jigs in 15 feet of water in brush; smallmouth bass good on crankbaits, plastic baits in 6 to 8 feet of water; walleyes fair on jigs with night crawlers in 10 to 12 feet of water on the flats; catfish fair on shad, liver.

▪ MILFORD: Low 70s, clear, normal. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: white bass, wipers good on Double W spoons where gulls are diving.

▪ WILSON: High 60s, clearing, 7 feet low. Outlook: Knothead’s reports: stripers very good on black salties, jigging spoons in Nelson’s Cove and off Pelican Point; smallmouth bass fair to good on live bait, crankbaits in rocky coves; catfish good lakewide.

▪ PERRY: 68 degrees, clear, 3 feet high. Outlook: Bait Hut reports: white bass fair to good where fish are chasing shad off rocky points; crappies good on minnows in 25 feet of water off bottom; channel catfish good on a variety of baits lakewide.

▪ COFFEY COUNTY: 84 degrees midlake, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Coffey County reports: smallmouth bass good; white bass very good on white plastic baits.

▪ CLINTON: High 60s, murky, 1 foot low. Outlook: Clinton Marina reports: white bass, walleyes fair drifting the deep-water flats; catfish good on shad, cut bait fishing from banks.

▪ HILLSDALE: 67 degrees, clear, one-half-foot low. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows in 12 to 15 feet of water in the brush; walleyes fair drifting jigs with crawlers, crankbaits on the flats.

▪ LA CYGNE: Mid-80s midlake, clear, normal. Outlook: Linn County Parks: wipers good at the hot-water discharge area; bass fair to good on crankbaits, jig-and-pigs.

▪ EL DORADO: 72 degrees, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows in 9 to 14 feet of water in brush; white bass fair on jigging spoons and crankbaits; walleyes poor to fair on a variety of baits on the flats.

▪ POMONA: 70 degrees, fairly clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Lighthouse Bay Marina reports: crappies fair to good on jigs, minnows off docks; catfish good on shad, cut bait lakewide.

▪ SHAWNEE MISSION: 69 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: catfish fair at night from the bank.

▪ HERITAGE: High 60s, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: catfish fair on worms, stink bait along the island and off the marina docks.

▪ GLEN ELDER: High 60s, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: white bass poor to fair (a few are being caught on crankbaits trolling on the flats).

▪ TUTTLE CREEK: 70 degrees, muddy, 7 feet high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: all species poor.

▪ KILL CREEK: 69 degrees, 1- to 2-foot clarity, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: all species poor.

Other area waters

▪ GRAND (Okla.): 71 degrees, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Grand Fishing Report reports: white bass, crappies fair to good on 1/8-ounce Go Go Minnows, Rooster Tails off main-lake points; catfish fair to good drifting shad off main-lake points.

▪ WHITE RIVER (Ark.): Clear, low water in the morning, power generation in the evening. Outlook: Gaston’s White River Resort reports: Fly fishing: trout excellent on pearl or ruby midges, sow bugs in low water and on marabou jigs and egg patterns when there is current. Spin fishing: trout excellent on Berkley Power Worms with one yellow PowerBait egg, redworms, night crawlers, spoons.

▪ BEAVER LAKE (Ark.): 72 degrees, clear, low. Outlook: Bailey’s Guide Service reports: stripers good trolling live shad in 20 to 40 feet of water in early morning and late evening at the mouth of large arms and in coves. Stripers also are being caught on umbrella rigs with white grubs and downriggers with Rapalas, Bomber crankbaits and spoons. Stripers also are being caught on 1-ounce white Bink’s Spoons in deep shad schools. Limits are being taken.

Brent’s best bet

Norfork Lake’s fall fishing is beginning to heat up. Guides and resort owners report very good fishing for hybrids and black bass along bluffs. Jigging spoons are the lure of choice, but some largemouths and Kentuckies also are being caught on jigs-and-pigs.
