Lure of the Week: the Jigging Rap
One of the pros’ secrets is out.
The Jigging Rap, a lure most fishermen associate with the cold of winter, also has a place in the heat of summer.
Take it from Brandon Palaniuk, one of the top pros on the Bassmaster circuit.
“It’s a trick I’ve had up my sleeve that I’ve kept secret for a long time,” Palaniuk said. “I always like doing something different.
“You can separate yourself from everyone else if you can find quality fish doing something that not everyone is doing.”
The Jigging Rap was designed for ice fishing, with the best results coming from straight up and down vertical fishing. But Palaniuk has adapted its use for open-water fishing, using aggressive snaps of the rod while using a horizontal retrieve.
“Snap your rod, and it will dart a foot or two to the left or right, and then continue falling fast,” Palaniuk said. “For fish that are in a negative, inactive mood, that erratic action triggers a feeding response.”
The Jigging Rap, made by Rapala, retails for $5.50 to $8.
