Watch a fisherman land a 550-pound grouper from a kayak

This was a true David vs. Goliath story.

When Jon Black set out on a recent fishing trip on the Gulf of Mexico near Fort Myers, Fla., he had one goal in mind: to prove that he could catch a big fish out of a kayak. But even he didn’t dream this big.

As the cameras for the “Chew on This” online fishing show rolled, Black hooked a goliath grouper almost as big as the boat he was fishing out of. The giant put up a huge fight and even broke Black’s fishing rod.

But by the time it was over, Black landed a goliath grouper that measured 83 inches in length and 73 inches in girth. Calculations put the fish at about 550 pounds.

Black, who owns the Crazy Lure Tackle Shop in Coral Gables, Fla., released his giant catch. But the video that was captured has gone viral. It even was featured on NBC’s Today Show.

The fish is believed to be the largest goliath grouper caught out of a kayak, and has brought new popularity to that style of fishing.

Black caught the fish on a live Jack Crevelle in 23 feet of water next to the bridge that connects Fort Myers and Sanibel Island.
