Fishing report for May 28
Brent’s best bet
Looking for some good ultralight fishing? The bluegills are beginning to spawn at many area reservoirs and the fishing has been hot. Try Blue Springs, Jacomo and the Reed Area on the Missouri side and Wyandotte on the Kansas side.
Missouri
▪ BLUE SPRINGS: High 60s, stained, 2 feet high. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: channel catfish very good on live bait along the dam at dusk and two hours after nightfall; bluegills good on crickets, redworms along the dam and in rocky areas; bass good on crankbaits on the flats; white bass fair to good on big soft-plastic baits near the spillway; carp good on prepared bait near the spillway.
▪ SMITHVILLE: 69 degrees, muddy in the river arms, stained on the main lake, 6 feet high. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies fair on minnows, jigs on the main lake; black bass fair on spinnerbaits, creature baits, Senkos in the newly flooded vegetation; white bass fair on Road Runners, jigs off main-lake points and near the Highway W bridge; channel catfish excellent on night crawlers in the back of coves where runoff is coming in; walleyes fair on crankbaits, jigs off main-lake points.
▪ REED AREA: 69 degrees, dingy, slightly high. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: channel catfish good on worms where runoff is entering lakes; bluegills, redear sunfish good on worms under a bobber; crappies, black bass poor to fair.
▪ TANEYCOMO: Clear, heavy water releases. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: trout good on silver and blue Rogues, white jigs, shad imitation flies, air-injected night crawlers.
▪ TABLE ROCK: 70 degrees, muddy in the rivers, fairly clear on the main lake, 1 foot high. Outlook: White River Lodge reports: bass very good on tube baits, jigs and on topwater lures early and late.
▪ NORFORK: 71 degrees, clear, 4 feet high. Outlook: Bink’s Guide Service reports: bass, stripers, hybrids good on Bink’s Spoons 20 feet down.
▪ BULL SHOALS: Low 70s, clear, 8.7 feet high. Outlook: 125 Marina reports: smallmouth bass excellent on Wacky worms, Hot’n Tots, Wiggle Warts in 25 feet of water off main-lake points; walleyes excellent on night crawler harnesses trolled in 20 to 25 feet of water; catfish good on limb lines, trotlines, jug lines with cut bait.
▪ JACOMO: Low 70s, clear, high. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: catfish good on live bait in rocky areas; walleyes fair to good on live bait on newly flooded flats; largemouth bass very good on minnows in 12 to 15 feet of water; bluegills good on crickets, redworms near the spillway; crappies poor to fair.
▪ LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 72 degrees, clear, one-half foot low. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: crappies fair on minnows in 15 feet of water in main-lake brush; bass good on topwater lures, jigs, plastic worms, plastic lizards off main-lake points; catfish fair to good on rod and reel or jug lines with cut bait in 18 to 20 feet of water.
▪ STOCKTON: 70 degrees, clear, 2 feet high. Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: crappies fair on crankbaits 12 to 15 feet down in 30 feet of water; walleyes good on jigs with night crawlers in 18 to 25 feet of water along rocky points and banks; bass fair to good on jigs, spinnerbaits off secondary points; catfish fair to good on night crawlers where water is running into the lake.
▪ TRUMAN: 68 degrees, slightly murky, 6 feet high. Outlook: Sterett Creek Marina reports: white bass, hybrids good on jigging spoons in 12 to 15 feet of water along the weir at the dam; crappies fair to good on jigs, minnows 10 to 15 feet down in 20 feet of water in brush; catfish fair to good on cut bait. Cody’s Bait and Tackle reports: Below the dam: crappies, catfish fair.
▪ POMME DE TERRE: 70 degrees, clear, 3 feet high. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: bass good on a variety of lures in 5 to 12 feet of water; muskies fair on crankbaits in 12 feet of water;the shallows; walleyes poor to fair.
▪ LONGVIEW: 69 degrees, murky 2 feet high. Outlook: Longview Lake Marina reports: all species poor.
Kansas
▪ COFFEY COUNTY: 70 degrees at dam, 80s at the hot-water outlet, clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Coffey County reports: smallmouth very good to excellent on Ned Rigs, crankbaits; white bass excellent; wipers good on Vibric Rooster Tails, Road Runners off rocky points and flats; catfish good on cut bait; walleyes fair n jigs with night crawlers.
▪ WILSON: 65 degrees, clear, 8 feet low. Outlook: Knothead’s reports: stripers, walleyes very good on jigs with night crawlers or trolling crankbaits; bass good ion plastic baits, small jig and pig in rocky shallows; catfish good on prepared baits.
▪ WYANDOTTE: 68 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Wyandotte Marina reports: channel catfish very good on night crawlers, liver where Marshall Creek is entering lake; bluegills good on crickets, wax worms in spawning areas; bass fair (but mostly small) on plastic baits.
▪ MELVERN: 66 degrees, murky, 7 feet high. Outlook: Melvern Lake Marina reports: crappies fair to good on jigs, minnows in 20 to 25 feet of water in the brush on the main lake and at the marina; smallmouth bass good on crankbaits, small plastic worms in the flooded brush; walleyes fair to good on night crawler harnesses in 15 feet of water on the flats; flathead and channel catfish very good.
▪ GLEN ELDER: High 60s, murky, normal. dingy on upper end, fairly clear on lower end, 1 foot low. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: walleyes fair on jigs with night crawlers, crankbaits on the flats; catfish fair where there is inflow.
▪ MILFORD: High 60s, fairly clear, 2 foot high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: bass fair to good on jigs in the rocky shallows;
▪ POMONA: High 60s, muddy, 4 feet high. Outlook: Lighthouse Bay Marina reports: catfish fair to good; crappies poor to fair.
▪ KILL CREEK: 67 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows in the flooded timber; bass fair early on plastic baits, spinnerbaits; catfish fair on worms, stinkbaits on the north side.
▪ SHAWNEE MISSION: 68 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows off the handicap pier and along the dam; catfish fair on worms, cut bait near the marina and along the dam; bass fair on jigs, spinnerbaits, plastic baits.
▪ LA CYGNE: 70 degrees, muddy, 2 feet high. Outlook: Linn County Parks reports: catfish good in the creeks.
▪ EL DORADO: 67 degrees, muddy, high. Outlook: Wildlife, Parks and Tourism reports: catfish poor to fair on shad.
▪ HILLSDALE: 67 degrees, murky, 6 feet high. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: all species poor.
▪ PERRY: High 60s, muddy, 9 feet high. Outlook: Tightlines Bait and Tackle reports: all species poor due to heavy inflow.
▪ CLINTON: High 60s, murky, 9 feet high. Outlook: Clinton Marina reports: all species poor.
▪ TUTTLE CREEK: High 60s, muddy, 1 foot high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: all species poor.

▪ GRAND (OKLA.): 71 degrees, murky, 8 feet high. Outlook: Grand Fishing Report.Com reports: black bass good on football-head jigs, 10-inch plastic worms in 15 to 25 feet of water on rock piles; white bass, crappies fair.
▪ WHITE RIVER (ARK.): Clear, heavy power generation. Outlook: Gaston’s White River Resort reports: rainbow trout excellent on pink Berkley Power Worms, yellow PowerBait, Thomas Buoyant Spoons; brown trout good on countdown Rapalas, Rogues, and brown or black marabou jigs.
