Fishing report for Sept. 25

FISHING

Missouri

▪ TRUMAN: 74 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Cody’s Bait and Tackle reports: wipers, white bass good on crankbaits, jigging spoons where fish are surfacing; catfish very good on jug lines with shad, panfish in 25 feet of water. Below the dam: Cody’s Bait and Tackle wipers very good, crappies, channel catfish good on shad or minnows.

▪ JACOMO: 70 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: Flathead catfish good on cut bait off main-lake points (a 47-pound flathead was caught recently); crappies good on minnows in 10 to 12 feet of water; channel catfish good on large minnows in 12 to 15 feet of water off points and docks; bluegills very good on crickets, redworms in rocky areas.

▪ SMITHVILLE: 70 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies poor to fair (a few are being caught on jigs, minnows in main-lake brush); black bass fair to good on spinnerbaits, Brush Hogs in the coves; white bass good on Rat-L-Traps, crankbaits off windy main-lake points; channel catfish good on night crawlers in the shallows in coves.

▪ TABLE ROCK: 79 degrees, clear, 4 feet low. Outlook: White River Lodge reports: bass excellent on Flutter Spoons, drop-shot rigs with small plastic worms in 25 feet of water along bluff ends, and on football jigs along 45-degree rocky banks.

▪ LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 75 degrees, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: crappies fair on minnows in 12 to 18 feet of water in brush; bass fair on jigs, plastic worms in 12 to 15 feet of water in brush.

▪ POMME DE TERRE: 73 degrees, clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: bass, walleyes fair on small crankbaits in shallows; muskies good on bucktails, crankbaits in shallows.

▪ TANEYCOMO: Very clear, four units running from 2 p.m. for seven hours. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: Trophy Area: trout good on No. 18 black or red zebra midges or scuds. Below Fall Creek: trout good on air-injected night crawlers, chartreuse and white PowerBait.

▪ LONGVIEW: 71 degrees, 35-inch clarity, normal. Outlook: Longview Lake Marina reports: catfish good on minnows off the marina docks (a 91/4-pound channel catfish was caught Wednesday morning); crappies fair on jigs, minnows off the marina docks.

▪ NORFORK: 76 degrees, clear, 5 feet low. Outlook: Guide Tom Reynolds reports: stripers fair on live shad in 40 to 50 feet of water and on Zara Spooks early and late; crappies fair on jigs, minnows in 15 to 20 feet of water in the brush piles.

▪ STOCKTON: 74 degrees, clear, 2 foot high. Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: bass fair to good on plastic baits, crankbaits from secondary points back into the coves; walleyes fair on jerkbaits in 10 feet of water along rocky banks; crappies fair to good on minnows, jigs in 12 feet of water in brush; white bass fair on jigging spoons, topwater lures where fish are surfacing in evenings.

▪ BULL SHOALS: 75 degrees, clear, 5 feet low. Outlook: 125 Marina reports: smallmouth bass, largemouth bass good on tube baits 25 to 35 feet of water off main-lake points and bluff points; catfish fair to good on jug lines, trotlines with cut bait.

▪ REED AREA: 68 degrees, clear, full pool. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: black bass fair on plastic worms, jig-and-pigs near weed lines and brush piles; channel catfish poor to fair (a few are being caught on chicken liver, cut bait); crappies fair on tube jigs, minnows near brush and weeds; bluegills poor to fair (a few are being caught on worms, small jigs under bobbers).

▪ BLUE SPRINGS: 70 degrees, clear, near normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: channel catfish fair on worms, cut shad near the dam; crappies fair on minnows off main-lake points; white bass fair early on Pepper Spoons, jigs where fish are surfacing.

Kansas

▪ MILFORD: Low 80s, clear, 2 feet high. Outlook: Rick Dykstra reports: wipers, white bass very good on spoons, topwater lures on the north half of the lake; smallmouth bass very good on small tube baits, other plastic lures in rocky areas; catfish good on cut bait in 6 to 15 feet of water.

▪ MELVERN: 77 degrees, clear, one-half foot low. Outlook: Melvern Marina reports: smallmouth bass excellent on crankbaits in 8 feet of water; crappies good on minnows, jigs in 8 to 16 feet of water in the brush; walleyes fair on night crawlers drifting flats; catfish good lakewide.

▪ PERRY: 71 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Bait Hut reports: crappies good on minnows in 8 to 18 feet of water in brush and drop-offs; white bass good on jigging spoons; catfish good on a variety of baits in Devil’s Gap and in the Hog Trough in areas that have been chummed.

▪ COFFEY COUNTY: 82 degrees midlake, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Coffey County reports: smallmouth bass good; white bass very good on white plastic baits; catfish and crappies fair.

▪ LA CYGNE: Mid-80s midlake, clear, 1 foot low. Normal. Outlook: Linn County Parks: bass good on north end in the creek; flathead catfish fair to good on panfish, shad.

▪ EL DORADO: 76 degrees, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism reports: crappies good on jigs, minnows in 8 to 10 feet of water in brush; wipers, white bass good on slab spoons in 14 feet of water in dam area and off main-lake points.

▪ WILSON: mid-70s, murky, 7 feet low. Outlook: Knothead’s reports: stripers good, white bass fair to good on black salties, slab spoons off Pelican Point; smallmouth bass fair to good on live bait, crankbaits in rocky coves; catfish good lakewide.

▪ POMONA: 76 degrees, clear, one-half foot low. Outlook: Lighthouse Bay Marina reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows off marina docks; wipers, white bass fair trolling crankbaits; catfish good on shad.

▪ CLINTON: 75 degrees, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Clinton Marina reports: smallmouth bass fair on crankbaits, jigs along rocky banks; channel catfish good.

▪ HILLSDALE: 75 degrees, clear, one-half foot low. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: crappies very good on jigs, minnows in 15 feet of water in brush.

▪ SHAWNEE MISSION: 72 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: crappies fair on minnows near marina and handicap pier; catfish fair on stink bait, panfish along north shore; bass fair on jigs, spinnerbaits along banks in the morning.

▪ WYANDOTTE: 70 degrees, very clear, normal. Outlook: Wyandotte Boats reports: largemouth, smallmouth bass fair (but mostly small) on plastic baits in the shallows.

▪ KILL CREEK: 70 degrees, 1- to 2-foot clarity, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: catfish fair on stink bait, liver, worms off the dock and near the island; bass fair on spinnerbaits, topwater poppers in the morning.

▪ HERITAGE: 70 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: catfish fair on worms, stink bait along the island and off the marina dock; bass fair on spinnerbaits, jigs along the banks in the morning.

▪ GLEN ELDER: 70 degrees, clear, normal. 2 feet low. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: white bass, walleyes poor to fair (a few are being caught on crankbaits trolling on the flats).

▪ TUTTLE CREEK: 75 degrees, muddy, 3 feet high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: all species poor.

Other area waters

▪ GRAND (Okla.): 73 degrees, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Guide Tony Coatney reports: white bass good to excellent on jigging spoons; crappies fair on jigs, minnows in main-lake brush; largemouth bass fair on the main lake.

▪ WHITE RIVER (Ark.): Clear, low water in the morning, power generation in the evening. Outlook: Gaston’s White River Resort reports: Fly fishing: trout excellent on pearl or ruby midges, sow bugs in low water and on marabou jigs and egg patterns when there is current. Spin fishing: trout excellent on live worms, Berkley Power Worms, spoons, spinners, crankbaits, PowerBait.

▪ BEAVER LAKE (Ark.): 73 degrees, clear, 7 feet low. Outlook: Bailey’s Guide Service reports: stripers good trolling live shad in 20 to 40 feet of water in early morning and late evening at the mouth of large arms and in coves. Stripers also are being caught on umbrella rigs with white grubs and downriggers with Rapalas, Bomber crankbaits and spoons. Striperrs also are being caught on 1-ounce white Bink’s Spoons in deep shad schools.

Brent’s best bet

Whether it be above or below the dam, Truman Lake is providing good fishing this week. Below the dam, wipers, crappies and channel catfish are hitting live bait. On the reservoir, the fishing for white bass and hybrids has been good where fish are surfacing. Catfish also are being caught on juglines.
