Fishing report for May 21
Missouri
▪ SMITHVILLE: 69 degrees, muddy in the river arms, stained on the main lake, 4 feet high. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies fair on minnows, jigs along banks on the main lake; black bass good on spinnerbaits, creature baits, Senkos in the newly flooded vegetation; white bass good on Road Runners, jigs off main-lake points and near the Highway W bridge; channel catfish excellent on night crawlers in the back of coves where runoff is coming in; walleyes fair on crankbaits, jigs off main-lake points.
▪ REED AREA: 72 degrees, dingy, slightly high. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: channel catfish good on worms where runoff is enter lakes; bluegills, redear sunfish good on worms under a bobber; black bass fair on spinnerbaits, plastic baits; crappies poor to fair (a few are being caught on jigs under a bobber).
▪ TANEYCOMO: Clear, heavy power generation. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: Trophy area: trout excellent on white jigs and drifting shad flies. Below Fall Creek: trout excellent on ginger or sculpin-colored jigs, air-inflated night crawlers.
▪ TABLE ROCK: 70 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: White River Lodge reports: bass fair to good on Ned Rigs, swimbaits in 8 to 15 feet of water on gravel points.
▪ NORFORK: 71 degrees, clear, 7 feet high. Outlook: Bink’s Guide Service reports: bass, hybrids and stripers good on topwater lures along the banks for the first three hours of daylight.
▪ BULL SHOALS: Low 70s, clear, 7 feet high. Outlook: 125 Marina reports: smallmouth bass excellent on green-pumpkin Gitzits, white trick worms off points; crappies fair on minnows, worms; catfish good on jug lines, limb lines, trot lines on worms, cut bait.
▪ JACOMO: 68 degrees, stained, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows in 12 to 15 feet of water; bluegills very good on crickets, wax worms, red wigglers; channel catfish good on night crawlers, cut bait where runoff is entering the lake; largemouth bass fair to good on jigs, grubs in the shallows.
▪ BLUE SPRINGS: High 60s, stained, one-half foot high. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: channel catfish very good on night crawlers, cut bait where runoff is entering lake; crappies fair on jigs, minnows in 12 to 15 feet of water; largemouth bass fair.
▪ LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 70 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: crappies fair on minnows, jigs in 12 to 15 feet of water (spawn is over); bass fair on wacky worms, jigs in 10 to 15 feet of water; catfish fair on jug lines with cut shad 20 to 25 feet down in 3o to 35 feet of water.
▪ STOCKTON: 72 degrees, clear, 4 feet high. Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: walleyes fair to good on jigs with night crawlers in 18 to 22 feet of water; crappies fair to good on chrome-colored crankbaits 18 to 20 feet down in 30 feet of water; bass fair on jigs, plastic along pea-gravel banks; catfish good on trot lines with night crawlers in the back of creeks.
▪ TRUMAN: 70 degrees, clear, 4 feet high. Outlook: Cody’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies,wipers fair on jigs in 15 to 20 feet of water. Below the dam: crappies good in the evening; catfish fair.
▪ POMME DE TERRE: 72 degrees, clear by dam, stained on upper end, 3 feet high. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: bass good on a variety of lures in the shallows; walleyes poor to fair.
▪ LONGVIEW: 66 degrees, murky 2 feet high. Outlook: Longview Lake Marina reports: all species poor.
Kansas
▪ COFFEY COUNTY: 70 degrees at dam, 80s at the hot-water outlet, clear, normal. Outlook: Coffey County reports: smallmouth excellent on finesse rigs in rocky areas, white bass excellent, wipers fair on Rooster Tails, Road Runners.
▪ GLEN ELDER: High 60s, muddy on upper end, fairly clear on lower end, normal. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: : walleyes good on jigs with night crawlers, big shiners on dropoffs; white bass good on jigs, Road Runners; crappies fair on jigs, minnows in 10 feet of water; catfish good along the banks.
▪ CLINTON: High 60s, muddy, 3 feet high. Outlook: Clinton Marina reports: catfish fair on a variety of baits in the shallows.
▪ WILSON: 65, clear, clear, 8 feet low. Outlook: Knothead’s reports: walleye god on jigs with night crawlers off Lucas Point; stripers good on live bait on the main lake.
▪ KILL CREEK: 67 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows in the flooded timber; bass fair early on plastic baits, spinnerbaits; catfish fair on worms, stinkbaits on the north side.
▪ SHAWNEE MISSION: 65 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows off the handicap pier and along the dam; catfish fair on wotrms, cut bait near the marina and along the dam; bass fair on jigs, spinnerbaits, plastic baits.
▪ LA CYGNE: 70, muddy, high. Outlook: Linn County Parks reports: flathead catfish poor to fair on trotllnes.
▪ MILFORD: High 60s, fairly clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: bass fair to good on jigs in the rocky shallows; walleyes fair to good on jigs with night crawlers in 6 to 15 feet of water on flats; catfish good on cut bait, shad.
▪ EL DORADO: 67 degrees, murky, one-half foot high. Outlook: Wildlife, Parks and Tourism reports: catfish poor to fair on shad.
▪ PERRY: High 60s, muddy, 7 feet high. Outlook: Tightlines Bait and Tackle reports: all species poor due to heavy inflow.
▪ MELVERN: 63 degrees, muddy, 3 feet high. Outlook: Melvern Lake Marina reports: all species poor.
▪ TUTTLE CREEK: High 60s, muddy, high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: all species poor.
▪ WYANDOTTE: 67 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Wyandotte Marina reports: channel catfish good on night crawlers, liver where Marshall Creek is entering lake.
▪ MELVERN: 63 degrees, muddy, 3 feet high. Outlook: Melvern Lake Marina reports: all species poor.
▪ HILLSDALE: 67 degrees, muddy, 3.6 feet high. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: all species poor.
▪ POMONA: High 60s, muddy, 6 feet high. Outlook: Lighthouse Bay Marina reports: all species poor.

▪ GRAND (OKLA.): 71 degrees, fairly clear, 4 feet high. Outlook: Grand Fishing Report.Com reports: black bass very good on Spro Frogs, Fishtek jigs in 1 to 4 feet of water in the flooded willows and bushes; white bass very good on Road Runners, Go-Go Minnows, crankbaits in 8 to 10 feet of water along windy banks; catfish good on Sudden Impact prepared bait, shad, night crawlers in 4 to 6 feet of water.
▪ WHITE RIVER (ARK.): Clear, heavy power generation. Outlook: Gaston’s White River Resort reports: rainbow trout excellent on pink Berkley Power Worms, yellow PowerBait, Thomas Buoyant Spoons; brown trout good on countdown Rapalas, Rogies, and brown or black marabou jigs.
▪ BEAVER (ARK.): 70 degrees, clear, 5 feet high. Outlook: Joe Farkas Guide Service reports: stripers good on topwater lures early and on live shad trolled under balloons or planer boards off main-lake points.

Brent’s best bet
With the heavy rains, the channel catfish have been concentrated near areas where runoff is entering major reservoirs. The catfishing has been hot at Smithville Lake, the Reed Area and Wyandotte Lake.
