Fishing report for May 7

Missouri

▪ SMITHVILLE: 63 degrees, clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies excellent on jigs, minnows along spawning banks; bass good on Sweet Beavers, square-bill crankbaits, spinnerbaits in the shallows along rocky banks; channel catfish good on night crawlers; white bass good on jigs around bridges, in rocky areas and the face of the dam; walleyes fair on jigs with night crawlers, small crankbaits off main-lake points.

▪ JACOMO: 62 degrees, stained, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: crappies very good on jigs, minnows along spawning bank; channel catfish good at night on chicken or turkey liver and on large minnows, goldfish during the day in rocky areas; bluegills good on crickets, wax worms, redworms; black bass good (but mostly small) on minnows, artificials in the shallows.

▪ BLUE SPRINGS: low 60s, stained, 1 foot high. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: crappies good on minnows along dam and rocky banks; channel catfish good on liver along the dam; hybrids good on swimbaits where Jacomo empties into Blue Springs Lake.

▪ LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 62 degrees, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: crappies good on jigs, minnows in 8 to 10 feet of water in back of coves (fish are spawning); bass good on topwater lures, plastic lizards, jigs on spawning beds behind boat docks; catfish good on cut bait in 12 to 15 feet of water.

▪ STOCKTON: 62 degrees, clear, 2 feet high Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: crappies fair to good on jigs, minnows in spawning areas; walleyes good on jigs with night crawlers in 14 to 30 feet of water off rocky points; bass good on jigs, Zara Spooks in less than 12 feet of water from the secondary points to backs of creeks; catfish fair to good on trotlines, limb lines with prepared baits.

▪ TABLE ROCK: 60 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: White River Lodge reports: bass fair to good on Ned rigs in 15 to 20 feet of water along spawning banks; smallmouth bass fair to good on paddletail swimbaits on wind-blown gravel flats; bass also fair on topwater lures before sunup in spawning coves.

▪ NORFORK: 68 degrees, stained, 2 feet high. Outlook: Bink’s Guide Service reports: bass good on creature baits in 6 to 8 feet of water along spawning banks; stripers good on topwater lures in the first two hours of the day.

▪ TRUMAN: Mid 60s, clear, 1 1/2 feet high. Outlook: Cody’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows along spawning banks; catfish good on shad, cut bait on jug lines. Below the dam: white bass, hybrids, crappies fair.

▪ LONGVIEW: 64 degrees, 1-foot clarity, normal. Outlook: Longview Lake Marina reports: crappies good on jigs, minnows along spawning banks just inside coves and off the marina docks; walleyes fair on jigs with night crawlers or minnows on the flats; bass good on a variety of baits along banks; catfish fair.

▪ TANEYCOMO: Clear, little or no generation. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: Trophy Area: trout good on tan scuds, 1/16th or or 1/32nd black marabou jigs with a No. 14 black zebra midge dropper on 2-pound test line. Below Fall Creek: trout good on air-injected night crawlers or Gulp eggs (white and pink).

▪ REED AREA: 68 degrees, clear, full pool. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: crappies fair on tube jigs near the brush and along rocky banks; channel catfish fair on a variety of baits; black bass good on a variety of baits in the shallows; bluegills and redear sunfish good on worms under a bobber.

▪ BULL SHOALS: 65 degrees, clear, 7 feet high. Outlook: 125 Marina reports: bass fair on jigs, crankbaits off wind-blown points and banks along old brush line.

▪ POMME DE TERRE: 66 degrees, clear at dam and murky in the creeks, 2 feet high. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: crappies fair on minnows, jigs along spawning banks; muskies fair on shad-colored Shallow Invaders in 3 feet of water.

Kansas

▪ WILSON: Low 60s, clear, 8 feet low. Outlook: Knothead’s reports: smallmouth bass good on minnows in 5 to 8 feet of water; walleyes very good on pink jig heads with worms or leeches in 6 to 14 feet of water; stripers good on minnows, crankbaits on the main lake; catfish good on cut bait.

▪ COFFEY COUNTY: 63 to 65 degrees, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Coffey County reports: smallmouth very good on Ned rigs along rocky banks; white bass, wipers good on Vibric Rooster Tails off shallow rocky points.

▪ LA CYGNE: 65 degrees, fairly clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Linn County Parks reports: bass good on plastic baits along the banks; crappies very good on jigs, minnows along spawning banks; blue and flathead catfish good on setlines.

▪ GLEN ELDER: 57 degrees, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: walleyes fair on jigs with night crawlers in Schoen’s Cove; white bass good on jigs, spinners on the west end; crappies fair to good on jigs, minnows along spawning banks in Mill Creek.

▪ HILLSDALE: 64 degrees, slightly murky, normal. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: crappies good on minnows along spawning banks; walleyes fair on crankbaits, jigs with night crawlers in 8 to 12 feet of water; bass fair on crankbaits in the shallows; catfish good on rod and reel with cut bait.

▪ MILFORD: 63 degrees, very clear, normal. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: bass very good on Chatterbaits, jigs in shallow spawning areas; walleyes fair to good on jigs with night crawlers; crappies fair.

▪ KILL CREEK: 63 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: crappies fair on minnows in the shallows; bass fair on spinnerbaits, soft-plastic baits; catfish fair on worms, stinkbait near the marina.

▪ SHAWNEE MISSION: 64 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows on the flats and along the dam; catfish fair on worms, cut bait, liver; bass fair on spinnerbaits, plastic baits on the flats and off points.

▪ MELVERN: 62 degrees, murky, 2 feet low. Outlook: Melvern Lake Marina reports: smallmouth bass good on crankbaits along rocky banks; channel catfish fair on liver, shrimp; walleye fair on night crawlers on Slow Death rigs.

▪ HERITAGE: 63 degrees, clear, degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: crappies excellent on jigs in the shallows; catfish fair on worms, stinkbait.

▪ TUTTLE CREEK: 61 degrees, murky, 2 feet low. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: crappies good along spawning banks; bass, saugers fair on Chatterbaits; catfish fair on cut baits. Heavy rains may cause changing fishing.

▪ EL DORADO: mid 60s, clear, 2 1/2 feet low. Outlook: Wildlife, Parks and Tourism reports: crappies good on jigs, minnows along spawning banks; walleyes fair on jigs with night crawlers, crankbaits in 8 to 20 feet of water on flats; channel catfish fair on a variety of baits.

▪ PERRY: Low 60s, clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Tightlines Bait and Tackle reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows along spawning banks; catfish fair on cut bait; flathead catfish hgood in the river on shad, panfish.

▪ POMONA: 65 degrees, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Lighthouse Bay Marina reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows in 10 to 15 feet of water (spawn is tapering off).

▪ CLINTON: 62 degrees, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Clinton Marina reports: crappies fair to good on jigs, minnows out from spawning banks; walleyes fair on night crawlers along flats; bowfishing good for gar on the surface.

▪ WYANDOTTE: 60 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Wyandotte Marina reports: crappies poor to fair (fish are scattered); bass fair (but small) on plastic baits in the shallows.

Other area waters

▪ GRAND (OKLA.): 67 degrees, fairly clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Jeff Williams reports: crappies good on Go Go Minnows, Crappie Kickers, minnows along spawning banks and boat docks; white bass fair to good trolling two Go Go Minnows, Rooster Tails in the Elk River; blue catfish very good in the Sailboat and Twin Bridges areas; channel catfish good on Sudden Impact prepared bait 5 feet under a bobber under schools of gar.

▪ WHITE RIVER (ARK.): Clear, variable power generation. Outlook: Gaston’s White River Resort reports: rainbow trout good on Thomas Buoyant Spoons, night crawlers, pink glow worms with a yellow Power Egg; brown trout good on suspending jerkbaits, countdown Rapalas.

Brent’s best bet

You don’t have to drive far from Kansas City to find good fishing this weekend. The crappie spawn at Smithville Lake is in full swing and limits of fish are being caught in the shallows. Good numbers of black and white bass, and channel catfish also are being landed.
