Fishing report for April 23

Missouri

▪ STOCKTON: 58 to 62 degrees, clear, 2 feet high. Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: crappies excellent on jigs, minnows in 2 to 8 feet of water along spawning banks; bass very good on jigs in 1 to 10 feet of water from secondary points to back of coves; walleyes fair to good on jigs, minnows off points and in creeks; catfish good on cut bait, prepared bait.

▪ LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 64 degrees, slightly murky, 4 feet low. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: bass good on a variety of baits in spawning areas; crappies good on jigs, minnows in the Gravois or Indian Creek areas; catfish good on shad in 8 to 10 feet of water.

▪ TABLE ROCK: 61 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: White River Lodge reports: largemouth, Kentucky, and smallmouth bass excellent on Ned rigs, suspending jerkbaits in less than 15 feet of water in spawning pockets; crappies fair on jigs (spawn is almost over); white bass poor to fair (most of fish have left spawning tributaries and are returning to the main lake).

▪ NORFORK: 64 degrees, fairly clear, 5 feet high. Outlook: Bink’s Guide Service reports: stripers good on spoons in 25 feet of water; bass good on topwater lures; crappies good on jigs in flooded brush.

▪ TRUMAN: High 50s, slightly murky, 2.7 feet high. Outlook: Cody’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies excellent on jigs, minnows in 3 feet of water on spawning banks; catfish good on shad. Below the dam: crappies fair on jigs, minnows at dusk; hybrids fair on spoons early and late and on cloudy days.

▪ LONGVIEW: 59 degrees, 42-inch clarity, 1 foot high. Outlook: Longview Lake Marina reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows off the marina docks; bass fair on soft-plastic lures in the shallows. A 101/2-pound walleye was caught off the marina docks.

▪ JACOMO: High 50s, stained, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: crappies good on jigs, minnows in 6 feet of water along rocky banks; channel catfish fair on shad off points; white bass good on minnows in the shallows.

▪ BLUE SPRINGS: High 50s, stained, 1 foot high Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: crappies very good on minnows along dam and rocky banks;; bass, channel catfish fair. A 20-pound flathead catfish was caught Tuesday.

▪ TANEYCOMO: Clear, moderate power generation. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: Trophy Area: trout good on zebra midges under strike indicators in the shallows, 3/32-nd-ounce brown jigs or No. 12 gray scuds with egg flies. Below Fall Creek: trout good drifting Gulp Eggs.

▪ SMITHVILLE: 59 degrees, clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: bass good on square-bill crankbaits, spinnerbaits in the shallows along rocky banks and in river arms; crappies fair to good on jigs, minnows along the banks in the evening; channel catfish good on liver, worms, shrimp in the back of coves; white bass good on Road Runners, spinners near the Highway W Bridge.

▪ REED AREA: 61 degrees, dingy, slightly high. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: crappies fair to good on tube jigs near the brush and along rocky banks; channel catfish fair on a variety of baits.

▪ BULL SHOALS: 58 degrees, clear, 6 feet low. Outlook: 125 Marina reports: bass fair on Flukes, jerkbaits along the banks; crappies fair on jigs in 20 to 25 feet of water off main-lake points.

▪ POMME DE TERRE: 58 to 60 degrees, clear, 2 feet high. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: bass fair on jerkbaits, jigs in 3 to 5 feet of water; crappies fair on jigs, minnows out from spawning banks.

Kansas

▪ GLEN ELDER: High 50s, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: walleyes good on jigs with night crawlers or minnows on the flats and dropoffs in Schoen’s Cove; white bass good in the river.

▪ HILLSDALE: 63 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: crappies good on jigs, minnows in 10 feet of water in the brush; white bass good on crankbaits trolled on the main lake; catfish poor to fair; bass fair on crankbaits in rocky shallows.

▪ WILSON: Low 60s, clear, 9 feet low. Outlook: Knothead’s reports: stripers good on minnows in the Elm and Hell creek areas; white bass fair on jigs, worms in the shallows; catfish fair.

▪ MILFORD: High 50s, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: wipers poor to fair on live bait; white bass fair to good on jigs, spinners in the river; catfish good on shad; walleyes poor to fair on the flats.

▪ WYANDOTTE: 60 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Wyandotte Marina reports: crappies fair to good on jigs, minnows in 10 feet of water in spawning areas; bass fair to good on Senkos, spinnerbaits along the banks; channel catfish good at night on night crawlers, liver off points.

▪ KILL CREEK: 58 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: crappies fair on minnows in the shallows; bass fair on spinnerbaits, soft-plastic baits; catfish fair on worms, stinkbait near the marina; trout fair on jigs, soft-plastic baits.

▪ SHAWNEE MISSION: 58 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows on the flats and along the dam; catfish fair on worms, cut bait, liver; bass fair on spinnerbaits, plastic baits on the flats and off points.

▪ MELVERN: High 50s, murky, 2 feet low. Outlook: Melvern Lake Marina reports: crappies poor to fair on jigs in 10 to 18 feet of water in brush; smallmouth bass fair in 5 to 8 feet of water off rocky points; blue catfish fair to good on cut bait.

▪ HERITAGE: 58 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Recreation District reports: crappies excellent on jigs in the shallows; catfish fair on worms, stinkbait.

▪ TUTTLE CREEK: High 50s, murky, 2 feet low. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: bass good on Chatterbaits, spinnerbaits in less than 6 feet of water in areas with gravel or wood; crappies poor; catfish good on cut bait.

▪ EL DORADO: High 50s near the dam, fairly clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Wildlife, Parks and Tourism reports: crappies fair to good on jigs, minnows in the brush; walleyes poor to fair on jigs off points; catfish fair on shad.

▪ PERRY: High 50s, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Tightlines Bait and Tackle reports: crappies fair on jigs, minnows out from spawning banks; walleyes poor to fair on jigs along rocky areas.

▪ POMONA: low 60s, murky, 3 feet low. Outlook: Lighthouse Bay Marina reports: crappies good on jigs, minnows along spawning banks; wipers fair on main lake; catfish good on shad.

▪ COFFEY COUNTY: Low 60s, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Coffey County reports: smallmouth good; white bass good; wipers fair.

▪ LA CYGNE: 60s, fairly clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Linn County Parks reports: crappies fair; white bass, wipers poor to fair.

▪ CLINTON: 56 degrees, clear, 1 foot low. Outlook: Clinton Marina reports: all species poor.

Other area waters

▪ GRAND (OKLA.): 61 degrees, fairly clear on the main lake, muddy in the creeks, 1 foot high. Outlook: Honey Creek Outdoors reports: paddlefish snagging good from Conner’s Bridge to Miami Park; bass very good on a variety of soft-plastic baits along spawning banks; crappies very good on jigs, minnows along banks and in the brush in boat slips.

▪ WHITE RIVER (ARK.): Clear, variable power generation. Outlook: Gaston’s White River Resort reports: rainbow trout good on Thomas Buoyant Spoons, night crawlers, pink glow worms with a yellow Power Egg; brown trout good on suspending jerkbaits, countdown Rapalas.

Brent’s best bet

The spawn is on at Stockton Lake. The crappies and bass are both shallow, and they’re biting. Good fishing for channel catfish also has been reported, and the walleyes are starting to bite.
