Fishing and hunting report for Sept. 3

FISHING

Missouri

NORFORK: 87 degrees, clear, 3 feet low. Outlook: Bink’s Guide Service reports: stripers, white bass, black bass, walleyes excellent on white Bink’s spoons in 40 feet of water on main-lake flats.

SMITHVILLE: 81 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Burton’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies excellent on minnows, jigs 6 to 8 feet down in 15 to 20 feet of water in main-lake brush; black bass fair to good on plastic worms, spinnerbaits along the grasslines off main-lake points; channel catfish good on a variety of baits on main-lake flats; white bass fair on Pepper Spoons, small crankbaits where fish are surfacing early and late.

STOCKTON: 85 degrees, clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Stockton Lake Guide Service reports: catfish fair to good on shad in 10 to 20 feet of water on the flats; white bass excellent early and late where fish are surfacing on flats and points; crappies fair on minnows in 20 feet of water in the brush.

LONGVIEW: 78 degrees, 43-inch clarity, normal. Outlook: Longview Lake Marina reports: catfish good on liver along the dam and off the marina docks; walleyes fair on night crawlers on main-lake structure; crappies good on jigs, minnows in the flooded timber and off the marina docks.

TABLE ROCK: 85 degrees, very clear, 3 feet low. Outlook: White River Lodge reports: largemouth bass good on 1/2 ounce jigs in 25 to 35 feet of water along bluff ends; spotted bass good on live bait suspended over deep trees.

TANEYCOMO: Very clear, one to two units running in the mid-afternoon. Outlook: Lilleys’ Landing reports: Trophy Area: trout good on No. 18 black or red Zebra midges. Below Fall creek: trout good on pink Trout Magnets in the Branson area and at Short Creek, and on night crawlers.

TRUMAN: 80 degrees, murky, 1 foot low. Outlook: Bucksaw Marina reports: crappies fair on minnows 10 feet down in 12 to 15 feet of water; bass fair to good on drop-shot rigs, big plastic worms off main-lake point s and crankbaits on main-lake flats; catfish very good on fresh cut shad in 12 to 15 feet of water on main-lake flats. Below dam: Cody’s Bait and Tackle reports: crappies good; catfish good.

BULL SHOALS: 86 degrees, clear, 41/2 feet low. Outlook: 125 Marina reports: largemouth bass fair on jigging spoons in 30 feet of water or on topwater lures at daybreak; catfish fair on trotlines, juglines with cut bait, worms, minnows.

LAKE OF THE OZARKS: 87 degrees, clear, 11/2 feet low. Outlook: Gier’s Bass Pro reports: crappies fair to good on minnows in 15 feet of water in brush; bass fair on Brush Hogs, plastic worms in deep brush; catfish fair on juglines with cut bait in 20 feet of water.

REED AREA: 83 degrees, clear, full pool. Outlook: Department of Conservation reports: black bass fair early and late on plastic worms, jig-and-pigs near weed lines and brush piles; channel catfish fair on chicken liver, cut bait under bobbers over deep water.

JACOMO: 83 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: channel catfish good on liver, large minnows in the coves; flathead catfish good on goldfish, extra-large minnows in the flooded timber; crappies fair on minnows, jigs off the marina dock and on the main lake; bluegills good on wax worms, crickets.

BLUE SPRINGS: 82 degrees, clear, near normal. Outlook: Forty Woods Bait and Tackle reports: white bass fair on Pepper Spoons; largemouth bass fair on spinnerbaits; channel catfish fair on liver near the Jacomo Spillway.

POMME DE TERRE: 83 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Muskie Guide Service reports: all species poor.

Kansas

WILSON: Low 80s, clear, 7 feet low. Outlook: Knothead’s reports: stripers good on salties in 16 to 30 feet of water trolling or drifting in the dam area; bass good on crawdad imitations in rocky areas; catfish good on a variety of baits lakewide.

CLINTON: 83 degrees, clear, one-half foot low. Outlook: Clinton Marina reports: crappies fair on the main lake and dock; walleyes good on night crawler harnesses trolled on flats; catfish good lakewide.

MILFORD: Low 80s, clear, 1 foot high. Outlook: Rick Dykstra reports: white bass good on jigging spoons, grubs on the north end of the lake near Military Marina; wipers good on shad in 11 to 18 feet of water; smallmouth bass fair on small plastic baits along rocky banks and points; blue catfish good on cut shad on main-lake flats.

TUTTLE CREEK: 87 degrees, slightly murky, 1 foot high. Outlook: Guide Vic Oertle reports: white bass excellent on Double W spoons, Bubbas in 8 to 14 of water on main-lake flats; catfish good on a variety of baits.

MELVERN: 80 degrees, murky, one-half foot low. Outlook: Melvern Marina reports: crappies excellent in 6 to 8 feet of water in brush; walleyes fair on jigs with night crawlers on main-lake flats; bass good on crankbaits in coves; catfish good on cut shad.

POMONA: 84 degrees, fairly clear, one-half foot low. Outlook: Lighthouse Bay Marina reports: white bass good where surfacing; catfish good on a variety of baits lakewide; walleyes poor to fair.

HILLSDALE: 82 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Jayhawk Marina reports: crappies good on minnows near brush in in 10 to 15 feet of water.

EL DORADO: 84 degrees, clear, one-half foot low. Outlook: Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism reports: wipers good in the evening where fish are surfacing; walleyes fair to good trolling crankbaits or drifting night-crawler harnesses on the flats; crappies fair on small jigs in top of deep brush piles.

PERRY: 83 degrees, clear, 21/2 feet high. Outlook: Bait Hut reports: catfish very good on shad, night crawlers in Banner Creek.

GLEN ELDER: 84 degrees, murky, 2 feet low. Outlook: Wayne’s Sporting Goods reports: catfish fair on shad, dip baits lakewide.

SHAWNEE MISSION: 84 degrees, clear, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: crappies fair on minnows near marina and handicap pier catfish fair on stinkbait, dungfish along north shore; bass fair on jigs, spinnerbaits along banks in the evening.

WYANDOTTE: 83 degrees, very clear, normal. Outlook: Wyandotte Boats reports: largemouth, smallmouth bass fair (but mostly small) on plastic baits in the shallows.

KILL CREEK: 82 degrees, 1- to 2-foot clarity, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: catfish fair on stink bait, liver, worms off the dock and near the island; bass fair on spinnerbaits along the banks in the morning; crappies fair on minnows at the marina and in the deeper water in the flooded timber.

HERITAGE: 82 degrees, murky, normal. Outlook: Johnson County Park and Rec reports: catfish fair on worms, stink bait along the island and off the marina dock; bass fair on spinnerbaits, jigs along the banks in the morning.

LA CYGNE: 92 degrees at the hot-water outlet, mid-80s mid-lake, clear, 1 foot low. Normal. Outlook: Linn County Parks: wipers fair on the north end; blue catfish good on rod and reel with panfish (fish weighing 60 and 40 pounds were caught Tuesday).

COFFEY COUNTY: 100 degrees at the hot-water outlet, low 90 degrees midlake, clear, 2 feet low. Outlook: Coffey County reports: smallmouth bass fair on crawdad imitations in rocky areas.

Other area waters

GRAND (Okla.): 83 degrees, clear, near normal. Outlook: Guide Rusty Pritchard reports: bow fishing very good along gravel banks; catfish very good on cut bait in 20 to 30 feet of water; white bass good on Go-Go Minnows, Bendable spoons in the Sweetwater and Governor’s Island areas.

WHITE RIVER (Ark.): Clear, low water in the morning, power generation in the afternoon. Outlook: Gaston’s White River Resort reports: Fly fishing: trout very good on midges, olive woolies, soft hackles. Spin fishing: trout very good on Berkley Power Worms, spoons, spinners, crankbaits, PowerBait.

BEAVER LAKE (Ark.): 83 degrees, clear, 5 feet low. Outlook: Bailey’s Guide Service reports: stripers good trolling live shad in 30 to 60 feet of water in early morning and at night. Stripers also are being caught on umbrella rigs with white grubs and downriggers with Rapalas, Bomber crankbaits and spoons.

HUNTING

The teal season opens Saturday in Missouri, Sept. 13 in Kansas.

Missouri

SQUAW CREEK: Low teal numbers. Good water and vegetation.

FOUNTAIN GROVE: 200 to 300 teal on the conservation area. Limited water. Good vegetation, excellent food.

GRAND PASS: 300 teal. Good water, good food; 200 acres wetlands will be hunted in pools, 6, 7 and 8.

BOB BROWN: 200 teal. Water and habitat is good.

NODAWAY VALLEY: 200 teal. Good water, habitat.

SCHELL-OSAGE: Low teal numbers. Water is very limited. Less than 25 huntable acres.

FOUR RIVERS: 50 teal. Water is very limited. Food conditions good. Unit 2 should offer best hunting.

SMITHVILLE: Low teal numbers.

Kansas

CHEYENNE BOTTOMS: 15,000 teal. Good water, good habitat.

MCPHERSON WETLANDS: 1,000 teal. Improving conditions.

MARAIS DES CYGNES: Low teal numbers. Water is limited.

QUIVIRA: 1,000 teal. Fairly good water and habitat conditions.

NEOSHO: 200 teal. Water is limited.

MELVERN: 20 teal. Good water and habitat on the upper lake. Marshes have very limited water.

CLINTON: Very few teal. Good conditions.

JAMESTOWN: Increasing teal numbers. Good water and habitat.

Brent’s best bet

Guides at Norfork Lake report that the fishing is on the upswing. Darrel Binkley reported excellent fishing for a variety of gamefish — everything from bass to stripers — on white 1-ounce Bink’s Spoons in 40 feet of water on the main lake.
