Former Mizzou Tiger Karissa Schweizer 11th in Olympic women’s 5,000-meter final
Former University of Missouri running star Karissa Schweizer placed 11th in the women’s 5,000-meter final Monday at the Olympics inside the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo.
Schweizer crossed the line in 14 minutes, 55.80 seconds in a muggy race, with temperatures in the low 80s and humidity to match. In the middle of the pack to start, Schweizer dropped back after the race’s favorites began to pull away, finding herself in the bottom three with a mile left. But a late push nearly got her into the top 10. She finished just over a second behind the next-fastest runner, Selamawit Teferi of Israel.
Schweizer, a six-time national champion at Missouri, was the faster of the field’s two Americans as her Bowerman Track Club teammate Elise Cranny finished 13th in 14:55.98.
Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands won gold in 14:36.79, the first non-Ethiopian or Kenyan to win an Olympic medal in the event since 2000. Kenya’s Hellen Obiri (14:38.36) won silver while Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay (14:38.87) earned bronze.
Schweizer has one more event in Tokyo, the 10,000-meter final, which is scheduled for 5:45 a.m. Central time Saturday.
