Star news services

The Missouri Mavericks are headed to the semifinals of the ECHL Western Conference playoffs.

The Mavericks completed their first-round sweep of the Quad City Mallards with a 4-1 victory on Friday night in Moline, Ill. The Mavericks won the series 4-0.

It marked the second time in franchise history that the Mavericks have swept an opening-round playoff series. They also swept the Evansville IceMen in the 2012 Central League playoffs.

Bryce Aneloski, Chris Owens, Rocco Carzo and Carter Verhaeghe each scored a goal on Friday for the Mavericks, who are the top seed and have home ice throughout the playoffs.

The Mavericks had the best record in the ECHL during the regular season.

Josh Robinson, who was named the ECHL goalie of the year last week, made 24 saves against the Mallards on Friday. He played the full game in the net.

Robinson gave up a goal to the Mallards’ Sam Warning in the third period.

The Mavericks outscored the Mallards 16-7 in the series.

The Mavericks do not yet know their opponent for the next round, but that series will start next Friday at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena in Independence.
