KC Mavericks sweep away Tahoe Knight Monsters in ECHL’s Kelly Cup Playoffs
The Kansas City Mavericks hockey team broke out the brooms at the Tahoe Blue Event Center in Stateline, Nevada.
And for the second straight year they’re Mountain Division champions.
With a 6-0 victory late Friday night, the Mavericks completed a four-game sweep of the Tahoe Knight Monsters in the best-of-seven Mountain Division Finals of the ECHL’s Kelly Cup Playoffs.
The Mavericks scored three goals in the opening period, one in the second and two more in the third. They put 33 shots on goal to the Knight Monsters’ 25.
Max Andreev scored twice and Cade Borchardt, Jackson Berezowski, Damien Giroux and Jake McLaughlin added a goal apiece.
The Mavericks won Games 1 and 2 of the series on home ice at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence. Then they won Thursday’s Game 3 at Tahoe Blue Event Center before closing out the series in Game 4 Friday evening.
The Mavericks advanced to the Mountain Division Finals by beating the Tulsa Oilers, four games to two, in the Mountain Division Semifinals.
Next up for the Mavericks is a Western Conference Finals series against either the Toledo Walleye or Fort Wayne Comets. And if they win that series, they’d be in the Kelly Cup Finals for the league championship.
Toledo and Fort Wayne are currently embroiled in a close Central Division Finals series. The Walleye lead that best-of-seven affair three wins to two, with Game 6 set for Saturday evening at the Huntington Center in Toledo.
