Kansas City Mavericks blazing through start of 2024 season with perfect 4-0 record
The Kansas City Mavericks have wasted no time setting the pace in the 2024-25 ECHL season, jumping out to a 4-0 start.
Led by a mix of returning stars and dynamic newcomers, the Mavericks have secured early season wins through both high-scoring offense and solid defensive play, positioning themselves as one of the teams to beat in the league.
Season opener: Newcomers and veterans propel Mavericks past Wichita
Kicking off the season on October 18 against the Wichita Thunder, the Mavericks showcased the depth of their roster with new faces making a significant impact.
After an early stumble that saw Wichita score just 51 seconds in, rookie Luke Loheit got the Mavericks on the board with his first career goal. Cam Morrison and Landon McCallum continued the scoring, each netting their first goals in a Mavericks uniform to put Kansas City in control.
The game tightened to 4-2 in the third period when Cade Borchardt added a crucial penalty shot goal, securing the final 5-3 victory.
Home opener: Last-minute goal seals the win
The following night at Cable Dahmer Arena, the Mavericks played to a packed crowd, taking on Wichita for a second game in a thrilling 5-4 win.
Kansas City started hot, with Morrison scoring on a power play just minutes in, followed by Borchardt and Pascal Laberge, giving the Mavericks a 3-0 lead by the end of the first. After David Noël added another goal to make it 4-0, the Thunder fought back with four quick goals to tie the game.
With 70 seconds left, Loheit netted the game-winner, putting Kansas City at 2-0 to start the season.
Dominance in Texas: Ostman and LaFontaine secure back-to-back shutouts
Traveling to Allen, Texas, the Mavericks held nothing back.
On October 25, Victor Ostman delivered his first professional shutout in a 4-0 victory, stopping all 16 shots he faced. Kansas City controlled the puck, with Max Andreev, Morrison, Borchardt and Jackson Berezowski each adding goals to secure the win.
The Mavericks outshot Allen 38-16, leaving little room for an American comeback.
Offensive showcase: Mavericks rout Allen 9-0 for 4-0 start
The Mavericks capped off a perfect weekend with a commanding 9-0 win over Allen on October 26.
With Jack LaFontaine in net, Kansas City scored early and often, led by goals from Andreev, Morrison, Berezowski, and McCallum, among others. The Mavericks fired 51 shots on goal, keeping relentless pressure on Allen and improving to 4-0.
With this strong opening, the Mavericks look to continue their winning streak at home next weekend as they face off against the Fort Wayne Komets on Friday, November 1, and Saturday, November 2.
