Kansas City Mavericks closing in on more records as Kelly Cup Playoffs approach
With fewer than 10 games remaining in the regular season, more records and accomplishments are starting to pile up for the ECHL-leading Kansas City Mavericks.
On pace for their best season in franchise history, the Mavericks played a three-game road set with the Allen Americans over the past week.
Wednesday was a morning matinee in the Dallas suburbs. A 10 a.m. puck drop began a low-scoring affair between these two longtime rivals. Alternating goals in the first two periods saw a 2-2 game head into the third period.
With the game seemingly headed to overtime, Jacob Hayhurst found the back of the net with fewer than five minutes remaining to give the Mavericks a victory before lunchtime.
An outstanding streak came to an end on Friday night when the two teams met for the middle game of the series. Allen recorded a 6-4 victory and ended KC’s league-leading 19-game road-point streak. The Mavericks went from Dec. 2 to March 20 without suffering a road loss in regulation.
Saturday marked the final regular-season meeting between the teams. Kansas City entered the contest with a chance to tie the single-season ECHL road-wins record.
MVP candidate Patrick Curry wasted no time in getting the Mavericks on the board, scoring 17 seconds after the opening faceoff. Allen answered two minutes later, but that was all the offense the Americans could muster; goaltender Cale Morris stopped 26 of 27 shots.
Goals from Hayhurst and rookie Cade Borchardt sent the Mavericks back to Kansas City with a 3-1 victory, giving them 26 wins away from home this season with four road games remaining.
There was an individual record Saturday, as well. Curry assisted on Borchardt’s goal in the third period. The assist gave the former Boston University captain 76 points this season, tying the Mavericks’ ECHL single-season record for points in a season. Curry currently ranks second in the ECHL in points and second in goals scored.
With nine regular-season games remaining, Kansas City is 46-11-4-2 (98 points). The Mavericks are seven wins and 12 points away from breaking the franchise record for wins and points in a single season.
