KC Mavericks pull off furious comeback, and you can catch the replay later this week
The second half of the season is underway. And a wild week saw Kansas City pick up four points — two wins — in three games.
Wednesday at Cable Dahmer Arena featured a Mavericks offensive explosion — and a 5-1 win — to kick off a three-game set with the division-rival Allen Americans.
Nolan Walker scored and team captain Jake Jaremko added two more to give the Mavericks an early lead. Allen then scored its lone goal of the evening to cut its deficit to 3-1 entering the second period.
A goal in each remaining period from Ryan Jones and Bradley Schoonbaert sent the Mavericks home with a 5-1 victory to increase their ECHL-leading point streak to 12 games.
The two teams faced off again Friday in front of another big crowd, but this time Allen took control in the second period and won 4-2. The Mavericks’ offense was bolstered by forward David Cotton, who scored both Kansas City goals. It was Cotton’s first multi-goal game in a Mavericks uniform.
The rubber match came on Saturday night — in the team’s annual Military Appreciation Night — and it was one of the wildest games of the season. In front of more than 5,500 fans, the Mavericks earned one of their most impressive comeback wins in recent memory.
Trailing 4-1 entering the third period, Kansas City put its foot on the gas. A third-period goal from Cotton and two from Walker forced overtime.
Kansas City controlled a frantic seven-minute overtime period with five shots on goal. But neither team scored, and the Mavericks entered their first shootout of the season.
A brick-wall performance from goaltender Cale Morris set up the hero of the night — Cotton — who buried the puck in the back of the net for the lone shootout goal from either team. After trailing 4-1 entering the final frame, the four-goal comeback was Kansas City’s biggest of the season.
The unsung hero from Saturday’s win was Morris. The Notre Dame alum came on in relief in the second period and did not allow a goal for two full periods, plus overtime and a shootout.
Currently sitting atop the ECHL Western Conference standings, the Mavericks are 29-8-2 (60 points).
Military Appreciation Night draws big crowd
With a crowd of 5,529 on Saturday night versus Allen, the Mavericks have seen big crowds on three consecutive theme nights. And there’s also a chance to catch a replay of that game on TV.
If you were unable to see Saturday’s comeback in person, a replay of the Mavericks’ Military Appreciation Night will be shown on 38 The Spot this Saturday at 2 p.m.
Later that night, the Mavericks will face the Wichita Thunder at Cable Dahmer Arena at 6 p.m.
Upcoming KC Mavericks schedule
A quirky schedule awaits the Mavericks this week. After hosting Utah at Cable Dahmer Arena on Tuesday night, the Mavericks have a three-in-three with Wichita this weekend with the lone home game coming on Saturday at 6 p.m.
