KC Mavericks had three historic offensive performances ... on the same night

The Kansas City Mavericks had two more memorable offensive showings in the last week, picking up two wins to stay near the top of the ECHL standings.

One of those showings was particularly special.

Wednesday night was the first of three matchups with the division-rival Allen Americans. Kansas City erupted for one of the best offensive nights in franchise history, led by three players: Cade Borchardt, Patrick Curry and Nolan Walker.

In his second game since missing time with an injury, Walker opened the scoring for the Mavericks — his 10th goal of the season, assisted by Borchardt and Curry.

From there, it was Curry’s turn in the spotlight.

Curry scored the next four goals for Kansas City, with all four assisted by either Borchardt or Walker. It was just the third four-goal game in Mavericks franchise history.

After Allen pulled its goaltender, Walker scored an empty-net insurance goal to seal the 6-4 victory. Walker’s final goal was assisted by both Curry and Borchardt.

Curry finished the game with four goals and two assists — the highest single-game point total in franchise history. Borchardt assisted on five of the six goals to tie the Mavericks’ single-game assist mark.

Walker notched two goals and three assists for the first five-point game of his professional career.

Entering Wednesday’s game, there had been three five-point games since the Mavericks joined the ECHL. The trio of Mavericks skaters doubled that output in one night.

The two teams met again on Friday night. Dealing with illness, injury and playing their fifth game in nine nights, Kansas City dropped that contest 4-1.

The rubber match was Saturday evening at Cable Dahmer Arena. Saturday night was also a special night on the Mavs’ calendar, featuring the Teddy Bear Toss.

In partnership with Children’s Mercy Kansas City, this hockey tradition called for all fans in attendance to throw teddy bears onto the ice after the home team’s first goal.

Thankfully for Mavs fans, they did not have to wait long.

Walker scored the first goal of the night. From there, teddy bears rained down on the Cable Dahmer Arena ice. After a brief pause to clear the ice, the stuffed animals were donated to Children’s Mercy Kansas City, Operation Breakthrough and the Salvation Army.

The second period saw back-and-forth action between the two longtime rivals. Allen tied the game up early in the period before alternate captain Cole Coskey scored his team-leading 13th goal. Another goal from Allen evened the game at 2-2 before Jacob Hayhurst sent Cable Dahmer Arena into a frenzy.

The goal from the veteran forward marked his 100th career professional point.

Strong goaltending from Dillon Kelley in the third period kept KC in front. The Mavericks held on for a 3-2 win.

After those three games, the Mavericks sit at 18-7-1 (37 points). Kansas City’s 18 victories are second-most in the ECHL this season.
