Kansas City Mavericks have a couple of games this week before taking a holiday break
The Kansas City Mavericks went 1-2-0 last week and are back for two home games before a quick holiday break.
Fans at Cable Dahmer Arena saw an exciting matchup between ECHL Mountain Division rivals — the Mavericks vs. the visiting Tulsa Oilers. After falling behind early in the game, the Mavericks held the Oilers scoreless for the remainder of the first period.
Early in the second frame, Mavericks veteran Ryan Harrison scored his first goal of the season and the lone goal of the second period for either side to tie things up at 1-1.
The start of the third period saw each team score within 12 seconds of each other. Tulsa found the back of the net just before Mavericks forward Cole Coskey scored his eighth goal in nine games. Moments later, Kansas City’s fifth-year player, Loren Ulett, tallied the team’s first shorthanded goal of the season on a breakaway to give the Mavericks a 3-2 lead.
Midway through the period, Coskey score his second goal of the season to add some breathing room. Nine of Coskey’s 10 goals this season have come in the last three weeks.
Over the weekend, KC traveled to Utah for back-to-back games against the Grizzlies. Forward Keeghan Howdeshell opened the scoring for the Mavericks, but Utah quickly struck back with three goals — two of which were shorthanded — to put the Grizzlies ahead.
In his first time back on the ice after missing six games with injury, captain Nick Pastujov scored a goal and added an assist. Early in the third period, Jeremy McKenna scored for the first time in four games to bring the Mavericks within one goal of their hosts. But Utah added two more goals in the third period to prevail 6-3.
Sunday’s matinee in Utah was a difficult offensive showing from Kansas City. Utah scored twice in the second period and added an insurance goal with 90 seconds remaining in the third, completing the sweep with a 3-0 win.
MILESTONES
Pastujov on Saturday scored his 100th career point as a pro (42 goals, 58 assists) in three seasons since leaving the University of Michigan.
The Mavericks have two veterans who are each approaching their 200th point: Ryan Harrison (196) and John Schiavo (199). And after his hot start to the season, McKenna is just three points from 100 (43 goals, 54 assists).
