Mavericks’ rally falls short in 4-3 loss to the Thunder
The Missouri Mavericks rallied after falling behind early Sunday, but they couldn’t climb all the way back in a 4-3 loss to the Wichita Thunder in Wichita.
The Thunder scored just 49 seconds into the game on a goal by Louick Marcotte. Vincent Arsenau added a shorthanded goal at the 12-minute mark of the period, and Jamie Doornbosch made it 3-0 when he scored fewer than 3 minutes later.
Missouri, 9-11-4, finally broke through on Shawn Pauly’s power-play goal with fewer than 2 minutes left in the opening period.
The only scoring in the second period came on Arsenau’s second goal of the game.
The Mavericks put pressure on the Thunder with two goals in the third period. Lukas Lofquist scored on the power play at 7:25, and Dane Fox added a goal a little over a minute later. But the Mavericks could never come up with the equalizer.
Missouri peppered Wichita goalie Scott Greenham with 44 shots, but Greenham made 41 saves. Goalie Josh Robinson stopped 26 shots for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks were two for six on the power play and three for three killing penalties.
Missouri’s next game is at 7:35 p.m. Friday against the Alaska Aces at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
