The highlights from Thursday’s day in Chiefs camp in St. Joseph, along with an injury report and Friday’s schedule.

THE OFFENSE

The Chiefs worked on a lot of red zone, situational football where the first-team offense faced the first-team defense, the second-team offense faced the second-team defense, etc. … Tight end Richard Gordon, who is battling Demetrius Harris for the third tight end spot, had at least two touchdown catches. … Ricky Henry, who was claimed off waivers last season, had a few snaps with the first team at left guard when Jeff Allen shifted over to right tackle. … Receiver Dwayne Bowe caught a touchdown in the corner of the end zone where he managed to get both feet down. Bowe had a bad drop later on, however, when he slipped between bracket coverage and couldn’t haul in the pass. … Receiver Frankie Hammond caught a long touchdown up the left sideline from Chase Daniel. … Tight end Anthony Fasano made a great catch in the end zone where he spun to catch a bad throw from Smith and still got his feet inbounds. … Receiver Kyle Williams made a diving catch for a touchdown on cornerback Chris Owens in the end zone and was slow to get up. He might have had the wind knocked out of him. … Receiver Weston Dressler also made a handful of nice plays. He caught a long pass down the right sideline, then caught a slant over the middle. He later dropped a punt, however.

THE DEFENSE

Cornerback Marcus Cooper batted away a deep pass by quarterback Alex Smith. … The Chiefs showed a look where all three of their pass-rushing outside linebackers — Tamba Hali, Justin Houston and Dee Ford — shared the field at the same time. Hali was lined up on the right side while Ford and Houston were lined up next to each other on the left. … Smith overthrew a receiver at one point and cornerback Ron Parker dropped an easy interception. Parker then dropped in his place and started doing pushups. He later batted away a pass to Bowe on a deep slant. … Smith tried to dump a pass into the flat for running back Jamaal Charles, but inside linebacker Derrick Johnson jumped the route and knocked it down.

INJURY REPORT

Coach Andy Reid said safety Sanders Commings broke a bone in his ankle and was having surgery Thursday.

Sanders missed the first five practices of camp with a foot injury and hurt his ankle in his first practice back on Wednesday while attempting to tackle Jamaal Charles. There is no timetable on his return.

Safety Eric Berry left practice early with what Reid deemed to be a sore ankle. Cornerback Marcus Cooper and receiver A.J. Jenkins each left practice early with hamstring injuries.

Defensive end Mike Catapano missed his second straight practice with an illness. Receiver Junior Hemingway (hamstring), cornerback David Van Dyke (hamstring), running back Joe McKnight (knee) and cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke (hamstring) all missed practice.

FRIDAY’S SCHEDULE

Practice will resume at 8:15 a.m.

The number

7: The number of practices it took for cornerback Sean Smith to get significant time with the first team since training camp started. Smith was demoted to the second team following his arrest in June for allegedly driving under the influence.
