Chiefs training camp report, July 26: Big plays highlight the first padded practice
The highlights from Saturday's day in Chiefs camp in St. Joseph, along with an injury report and Sunday's schedule.
THE OFFENSE
Receiver Mark Harrison kicked off individual drills by high-pointing a deep ball down the sideline from Alex Smith … Eric Fisher got most of the reps on the first team at left tackle but newly-signed veteran Ryan Harris rotated in a bit … Rishaw Johnson started out with the first team at right guard, though rookie Zach Fulton rotated in … The Chiefs worked on some hurry-up stuff … A.J. Jenkins dropped a wide-open pass in the end zone for what should have been a touchdown early in practice, but redeemed himself with a couple of great catches later on. The best came on a great throw from Alex Smith, who scrambled to his left and delivered a bullet deep down the left sideline, which Jenkins caught between two defenders … Smith connected with receiver Kyle Williams on a deep pass down the sideline in which Williams did a nice job of tracking the ball … Weston Dressler was targeted on two consecutive plays at one point; he failed to come up with a tough catch at his ankles downfield from Tyler Bray and then dropped a catchable ball on a short route … rookie receiver Albert Wilson made a nice catch on the sideline.
THE DEFENSE
Cornerback Sean Smith smothered Frankie Hammond on a slant during individual drills and came away with the interception. He’s still on second team, though … Linebacker Joe Mays forced a fumble by Jamaal Charles on the first play of the inside running period … Cornerback Chris Owens was feisty Saturday, as he knocked away a pass in individual drills, got in a tussle with center Rodney Hudson and delivered a big hit to Knile Davis during the team period … Quarterback Tyler Bray threw a slant toward hisr ight a little behind receiver Frankie Hammond, who tipped the ball right into the waiting arms of safety Malcolm Bronson … Cornerback Phillip Gaines had a nice deflection over the middle. He also played a little nickel cornerback … Nico Johnson took first-team reps at inside linebacker when Mays left with an injury, and Johnson showed some newfound mobility by sticking with Charles on a wheel route and playing a role in an incompletion … Safety Eric Berry recorded an interception over the middle, but the play was wiped out due to a penalty.
INJURY REPORT
Receiver Junior Hemingway (hamstring), safety Eric Berry (dislocated finger) and linebacker Joe Mays (sore knee) all left practice early with their respective injuries.
Reid chalked up Mays' injury to the typical wear-and-tear a seven-year veteran has to put up with.
“He's been in the league a long time, right?” Reid said. “So we just work with that knee and make sure we monitor it.”
Safety Sanders Commings (foot strain), running back Joe McKnight (knee), cornerback David Van Dyke (hamstring) and guard Rokevious Watkins (herniated disk) all missed practice for the third straight day with their respective injuries.
Reid said Watkins will not need surgery.
“They're gonna see if they can rehab him and get him back here,” Reid said
Reid said the reps for left tackle Eric Fisher and tight end Travis Kelce will continue to be monitored. Both players participated Saturday but sat out certain portions of practice.
SUNDAY'S SCHEDULE
8:15 a.m.
The number: 6,200 Saturday's attendance at Missouri Western for Family Fun Day, which Reid said is a record for the practice field.
“We appreciate (the fans), they kind of push you through that first day in pads,” Reid said. “When you get a little tired those last couple of periods and you have a tendency to slow down, the fans get you going and you roll.”
