Chiefs sign outside linebacker Andy Mulumba
The Chiefs are adding to their depth at outside linebacker.
The club has signed Andy Mulumba to a one-year deal, his agent, Tom Tafelski, confirmed to The Star on Friday.
“He's very excited to be there,” Tafelski said. “He loves barbecue — that made it even better.”
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported the news first.
Mulumba, who turned 26 in January, was signed by the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2013. He has spent the last three years with the Packers, recording 35 tackles and a sack in 22 games.
Mulumba, who is listed at 6 feet 3 and 260 pounds, had his most productive season in 2013, when he appeared in 14 games (three starters) and recorded 30 tackles and a sack. He tore his ACL in 2014 and had four tackles in six games in 2015.
Mulumba was scheduled to be a restricted free agent this offseason, but the Packers declined to offer him a tender, making him a free agent, where the Chiefs scooped him up.
“He’s looking forward to learning about the town and people of K.C. and is very interested in being a community guy,” Tafelski said. “That's what he liked about Green Bay, that small hometown feel, and he feels he'll have that in K.C. He likes what K.C. has to offer as an organization.”
Mulumba joins an outside linebacker corps that includes two Pro Bowlers in Tamba Hali and Justin Houston, a 2014 first-round pick in Dee Ford, a veteran special teams ace and part-time defensive contributor in Frank Zombo and another youngish free agent looking to prove himself in Jonathan Massaquoi.
There could be an opportunity for playing time for any of them. Hali, who was re-signed to a three-year deal this offseason, is 32 years old. He sat out practice most of last year to rest his balky knees. Houston is rehabbing from offseason ACL surgery and has been given a 6-12 month recovery timeline, which means he could return before the season or miss all of it.
