Chiefs’ Marcus Peters is pro football writers’ defensive rookie of the year

Add another honor to Marcus Peters’ collection.

On Tuesday, the Pro Football Writers of America chose Peters as its 2015 NFL defensive rookie of the year. The award is chosen by accredited writers who cover the NFL daily.

Peters earlier became the first Chiefs rookie to be selected to the Pro Bowl since safety Eric Berry made it in 2010. Peters, who was selected 18th overall in the 2015 NFL draft, tied for the league lead in interceptions with eight, led the league in interception yards with 280 and also led the league in passes defended with 26.

Peters, who was also the NFL’s defensive rookie of the month for December, finished with 60 tackles and had an interception in the Chiefs’ 30-0 wild-card playoff win over the Houston Texans — their first postseason victory in 22 years.

Mitch Morse also made the football writers’ all-rookie team at center. Morse, the Chiefs’ second-round pick, made a successful conversion from tackle, where he played his last two seasons at Missouri. The 6-foot-6, 305-pounder started 15 games this season but missed the Chiefs’ two playoff games because of a concussion.

It was the second known concussion Morse has had this year, as he also missed the Chiefs’ 34-20 win over the Oakland Raiders on Dec. 6 with one.
