Chiefs’ Spencer Ware scores first NFL touchdown
Spencer Ware had been waiting for this moment for a while. His 4-yard plunge in the fourth quarter marked the first touchdown of his two-year NFL career.
“They called the right play, the linemen executed well, it was just (on) me to get it in,” Ware said. “It was close, I didn’t want it to come up short.”
Ware has 20 yards in four carries since he was called up from the Chiefs’ practice squad after Jamaal Charles’ season-ending injury.
“It means a lot,” Ware said. “Lets me know it’s possible, let me know that many more can come just like. Gotta keep working.”
The Chiefs recorded rushing touchdowns by four different players Sunday for only the second time in franchise history.
The last time it happened was Oct. 2 1960, when Abner Haynes, Johnny Robinson, Bo Dickinson and Cotton Davidson scored against the New York Titans.
Chiefs switch up the line
Without Ben Grubbs, who has a neck injury, the Chiefs started their fifth different offensive line in eight games. The unit, from left to right, was left tackle Eric Fisher, left guard Jeff Allen, center Mitch Morse, right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and right tackle Jah Reid.
Donald Stephenson, who started the first six games of the season, did not start. Neither did Zach Fulton, who started three games at right guard.
Chiefs inactives
The following players were inactive for the Chiefs: quarterback Aaron Murray, cornerback Marcus Cooper, linebacker Ramik Wilson, Grubbs, defensive end Mike DeVito, tight end James O’Shaughnessy and receiver Frankie Hammond.
Brian Parker took over for O’Shaughnnessy as a blocking tight end and received his first career snaps in a regular-season game. He did not catch a pass but did help spring De’Anthony Thomas on his 10-yard touchdown run.
Captains
The Chiefs’ captains were Allen, safety Tyvon Branch and nose tackle Dontari Poe.
Worth noting
▪ The Chiefs’ 45 points tied an International Series record, matching the Patriots’ total when they beat the St. Louis Rams 45-7 on Oct. 28, 2012.
▪ The Chiefs are 3-0 in games in which Alex Smith rushes for a touchdown. He had 78 yards and a touchdown in five carries Sunday.
▪ Sunday’s margin of victory was the Chiefs’ largest since they beat Washington by the same score on Dec. 8, 2013.
▪ Outside linebacker Justin Houston recorded his first interception since Oct. 14, 2012.
▪ Safety Ron Parker’s two sacks are a career high.
