Chiefs have options to replace Ben Grubbs at guard
One of Ben Grubbs' best characteristics has been his durability; during his nine-year career, he's played in 129 of 135 possible games.
But with Grubbs ruled out of Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions with a neck injury, his replacement at left guard remains a mystery.
“Yeah, we’re rotating a couple folks in there,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “I'll let you know on Sunday.”
The Chiefs have some options. Starting right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif spent most of last season practicing at left guard, while Zach Fulton — who started three games at right guard this year — started all 16 games on the right side last year.
Meanwhile, starting right tackle Jeff Allen was a 14-game starter at left guard in 2013. If the Chiefs were to move him inside, they could start Donald Stephenson or Jah Reid at right tackle.
Stephenson started six games at left tackle before getting benched last week for Eric Fisher, while Reid started two games at right tackle this year before getting benched (also for Fisher).
Grubbs is one of three Chiefs listed as out for Sunday's game, including defensive end Mike DeVito (concussion) and inside linebacker Ramik Wilson (ankle).
Chiefs injury report
Outside linebacker Tamba Hali (knee) is questionable for Sunday's game, but Reid indicated he's okay.
Hali, 31, had two sacks in the Chiefs' 23-13 win over the Steelers last Sunday, despite his balky knee.
“Tamba will be fine,” Reid said. “This is a normal day of rest — we were on turf, so we gave him a breather there.”
Lions injury report
The Lions only have one starter listed as out for the game in linebacker DeAndre Levy (hip). Right tackle LaAdrian Waddle (knee) is questionable.
