Chiefs sign defensive end Allen Bailey to four-year extension worth $25 million
It appears defensive end Allen Bailey has shown enough in his first go-round as a starter to stick around for a while.
The Chiefs on Saturday signed Bailey to a four-year extension worth $25 million with $15 million guaranteed, multiple sources confirmed to The Star. That includes a $10 million signing bonus.
The Chiefs later announced the signing in a release but did not disclose terms. Pro Football Talk first reported the terms of Bailey’s contract.
“We are happy that we were able to reach an agreement to keep Allen in Kansas City,” Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said. “He has developed into a good football player and a key member of our defense.”
Bailey, a fourth-year pro who was in the final year of his rookie deal, has thrived in his first season as a full-time starter. Through nine games, the 2011 third-round pick has racked up 27 combined tackles and a career-high four sacks for the Chiefs, 6-3.
Last season, Bailey finished with 30 combined tackles and a sack in spot duty for the Chiefs. He spent most of the season as a backup defensive end behind starters Mike DeVito and Tyson Jackson and as an interior pass rusher next to Dontari Poe in the Chiefs’ nickel defense.
But Bailey, 25, has bulked up since then. Though he is listed at 6 feet 3 and 288 pounds, he said in training camp that he worked to get closer to 300 pounds to help him hold up against the run and become a three-down player.
The move appears to have worked. Bailey has already played 472 snaps this year, which is 19 more than he played all of last year and the second-most of all of the Chiefs’ interior linemen. Only to Poe, who has logged 494, has played more. The next closest is Jaye Howard, who has played 225 snaps.
According to NFL Players Association records, the Chiefs currently have about $4.8 million in cap room. Bailey entered the season with a cap number of $808,986.
