How much are the Hunts worth? All about the family moving the Chiefs to Kansas

One of the richest families in America will be making their legacy known in Kansas, following the Kansas City Chiefs’ historic move that was announced Dec. 22.

In an open letter to Chiefs Kingdom, the team’s CEO and chairman Clark Hunt opened up about the foundation his late father and Chiefs founder, Lamar Hunt Sr., laid down, which led to decades of memories, championships and fandom in the team’s 65-year history.

“Dad consistently looked to the future and propelled the game forward for nearly half a century.,” Clark Hunt said in his statement. “Every step of the way, he prioritized the fans. And every step of the way, he thought about the next generation.”

Well, the next generation of Chiefs Kingdom will arrive in Kansas by 2031. None of that erases the legacy the Hunt family created in Missouri, even as the team establishes new beginnings across state lines.

Who owns the Chiefs?

Lamar Hunt Sr. not only founded the Chiefs, but also founded the American Football League, which would later merge with the NFL in 1966. The Chiefs were originally the Dallas Texans, who played in the AFL from 1960-1962 before Lamar Hunt Sr. moved the team to Kansas City

Lamar Hunt Sr. was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1972, just 13 years after the AFL was founded, according to the Chiefs. He was also the reason we call the NFL’s premier event the Super Bowl, which reportedly derived from watching his children playing with the Wham-O “Super Ball” toys.

Since the 1984-1985 NFL season, the AFC Championship trophy has been named the Lamar Hunt Trophy to honor his contributions to football.

The team is co-owned by Lamar Sr.’s four children: Lamar Hunt Jr., Sharron, Clark and Daniel. Hunt Jr. lives in Leawood, while the other siblings legally reside in Dallas. Each sibling has a 25% stake in the Chiefs.

What is the Hunt family’s net worth?

Forbes reports that the Hunt family is net worth $24.8 billion. It’s also reported that each of the Hunt siblings’ net worth is $1.6 billion.

The Chiefs are worth over $4.7 billion, according to Forbes.

In 2024, Forbes had the Hunts ranked as the 12th richest family in America. The richest family in 2024 was the Walton family, whose net worth was listed at $267 billion. The majority of the Walton’s wealth comes from their stake in Walmart.

How does the Hunt family make money?

The family’s fortune started with H.L. Hunt, who was an oil wildcatter, which is a person who drills wells in order to retrieve oil out of them. He founded Hunt Oil Company in 1934, and has several subsidiaries across the world, according to Forbes. H.L.’s daughter, Caroline, founded Rosewood Hotels & Resorts in 1979, before selling it in 2011, according to CBS News. Lamar Hunt Sr. was the son of H.L.

The Hunt family is also involved in other sports franchises, as they own the MLS club FC Dallas while also having a minority stake in the NBA’s Chicago Bulls.

What have the Chiefs accomplished while owned by the Hunt family?

A lot. The last decade alone saw the Hunt family turn the Chiefs into a dynasty, which includes back-to-back Super Bowl wins, utter dominance in the AFC West, while bringing in franchise cornerstones like Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid.

The Hunt family was also instrumental in bringing the 2023 NFL Draft to Kansas City, proving that smaller markets can handle an event of that magnitude. The event drew in 312,000 visitors for the three-day event.

Outside of football, the Hunt family has done numerous philanthropic work for Kansas City. In 2024, the Chiefs, the Hunt Family Foundation and NFL have made a combined $200,000 donation to the #KCStrong Fund, which supported those impacted by the shooting at the 2024 Super Bowl celebration rally.

According to a ProPublica database, the Hunt Family Foundation had over $3.7 million in charitable disbursements in 2024.
