The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back a familiar face at quarterback, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Kansas City will sign Shane Buechele to its active 53-man roster off the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad.

Buechele, 27, began his NFL career with the Chiefs when he signed with the team as an undrafted free agent out of SMU following the 2021 NFL Draft.

He spent two seasons in Kansas City (2021–22), primarily on the team’s practice squad. When the Chiefs waived him at their 2023 53-man roster cutdown, he signed with Buffalo’s practice squad, where he has remained since.

The Chiefs needed an additional quarterback after Gardner Minshew suffered a knee injury during the team’s 26-9 Week 16 loss to the Tennessee Titans. Minshew had been filling in for Patrick Mahomes, who tore his ACL and is done for the season.

Upon Minshew’s exit, third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun entered the game, finishing 11-of-16 for 111 yards in the loss.

Kansas City hosts the Denver Broncos on Thursday night as part of the NFL’s three-game Christmas Day showcase. Oladokun is expected to start, with Buechele serving as the backup.
