How to watch Monday’s high-stakes Chiefs stadium meeting in Kansas
High-ranking Kansas lawmakers will meet Monday afternoon to discuss a not-yet-disclosed proposal between the Chiefs and the state of Kansas. Kansas Citians and Chiefs fans located elsewhere can tune in virtually.
The Kansas Legislative Coordinating Council, or LCC, will gather Monday at 1 p.m. This is the culmination of a year-and-a-half-long campaign to move the football team across the state line. If approved, a new Chiefs stadium would be one of the largest economic development projects in Kansas.
The meeting comes hours before Gov. Laura Kelly is reportedly planning to hold a “special announcement” with lawmakers. Eighteen months ago, the Democratic governor signed a bill into law authorizing the state to pay for up to 70% of new stadium costs with future sales tax revenue generated by the development. Missouri’s plan, approved this summer, would pay for up to 50% of new stadiums for the teams.
Kansas would not require a local vote to build a new stadium, unlike Missouri. In 2024, Jackson County voters rejected a 40-year stadium sales tax extension, which would have paid for a new Royals stadium and major upgrades to Arrowhead Stadium.
A Chiefs stadium with a roof is estimated to cost around $3 billion, not accounting for any practice facilities.
