Chiefs confront brutal reality: Mahomes out with torn ACL & playoff streak ends

The Chiefs have reached a stopping point. They won’t be in the playoffs thanks to last weekend’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. A 10-year run of postseason appearances, the second longest in NFL history, comes to an end.

But the bigger news from the game was the season-ending knee injury to Patrick Mahomes. He underwent surgery on Monday and the recovery has started, but his timetable to return is uncertain. This will be a different offseason for Mahomes and the Chiefs.

On SportsBeat KC, the sports podcast of The Kansas City Star and KCUR, beat writer Pete Sweeney and Star columnist Sam McDowell discuss this new reality for the Chiefs and what it means as the team closes out 2025 and prepares for next season.
