What are Chiefs’ options if Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith misses time with injury?
Chiefs right guard Trey Smith, who left Sunday’s victory over the Indianapolis Colts with an ankle injury, likely will miss Thursday’s game at the Dallas Cowboys.
Smith suffered the injury in the second quarter of the Chiefs’ 23-20 overtime victory and was replaced in the second half and extra period by Mike Caliendo, who played 58 snaps.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network first reported the news. He said Smith is dealing with “both high- and low-ankle sprains.”
If Caliendo moves into Smith’s spot, the Chiefs would have Hunter Nourzad and Jaylon Moore, who usually plays tackle, available in backup roles.
Smith missed a game earlier this season, against the Washington Commanders in Week 8, dealing with a back injury.
Smith, in his fifth season, earned a Pro Bowl slot last year. He became the NFL’s highest paid offensive guard when he signed a contract extension for four years, $94 million with $70 million guaranteed before training camp opened.
Other Chiefs injured against the Colts were tight end Noah Gray (head injury) and cornerback Chris Roland-Wallace (back).
Also, the Chiefs signed running back Dameon Pierce, formerly of the Houston Texans, to the practice squad. Pierce, in his fourth season, rushed for 936 yards as a rookie.
