Here’s what Chiefs OC Matt Nagy says about other teams showing interest in him

Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy loves his job.

That doesn’t mean he can’t eventually feel the same affection for another one. Nagy, in the fourth year of his second stint with the Chiefs, is overseeing an offense that at times has resembled the best years of the Patrick Mahomes era.

The Chiefs have scored at least 28 points in three straight games for the first time since 2021. Mahomes is coming off his best passer-rating game since 2022.

As Sunday’s home game with the Las Vegas Raiders approaches, this high-flying offense ranks in the top 10 in points and yards after finishing outside the top 10 in one or both categories for each of the past two seasons.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Nagy’s name has been associated with the Tennessee Titans’ head coach opening. The Titans fired head coach Brian Callahan after a 1-5 start and are seeking a new direction.

Nagy has been listed by at least one betting service as the leading candidate for the Tennessee job. First-year Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi worked for the Chiefs from 2009 to 2024.

Nagy, 47, said experience serves as a guide as the football hot stove heats up.

“I’ve been through this situation before,” he said. “I think it’s very, very important that you’ve got to figure out ways to navigate it.”

Nagy worked under Chiefs head coach Andy Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles and was part of Reid’s original 2013 staff in Kansas City. After the 2017 season, however, Nagy left the Chiefs to become head coach of the Chicago Bears.

In his first season there, the Bears won the NFC North for the first time since 2010. Nagy was named NFL coach of the year.

Then he guided the Bears to a second straight playoff season with Mitch Trubisky as his quarterback. Two losing seasons followed, though, and Nagy was fired.

Nagy returned to Reid’s staff, first as a quarterbacks coach and for the past three years as offensive coordinator. Although the Chiefs’ offensive numbers dipped in 2023 and 2024, they reached the Super Bowl both seasons, winning it all in 2023.

As his name again becomes a hot commodity for jobs elsewhere, Nagy said he’ll only be considering such outside opportunities in the offseason.

“It’s only fair to your peers, your players ... to stay true to them,” he said. “You stand in the moment.”

If the time does come to consider another job, he added, “you look forward to it. But the time’s not right now. I love coming here, being with these guys every day. It’s just awesome.”

Reid said he hadn’t heard from another team yet but supports the idea of his coordinators — like Nagy, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is a former head coach who could draw another franchise’s eye — landing head-coaching jobs.

“I’m (Nagy’s) biggest fan, and Spags likewise,” Reid said. “If they have that opportunity, more power to them. I hope he gets that opportunity for sure, tremendous coach and person.”
