Chiefs make final call on Xavier Worthy’s status for Sunday’s home opener

The flicker of hope that Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy would play in the home opener was dashed a day before kickoff.

The Chiefs posted a message on social media that Worthy would be out of Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Worthy suffered a shoulder injury on the third play of the Chiefs’ opening game against the Los Angeles Chargers in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Sept. 5. He collided with tight end Travis Kelce on a short crossing route.

On Friday, Andy Reid said Worthy’s chances of playing against the Eagles were “slim” but didn’t rule out the team’s top wide receiver from the 2024 season.

During Thursday’s practice, Worthy wore a compression sleeve that ran from his right wrist to shoulder area. On Friday, he shed the sleeve entirely, even making a one-handed grab during the brief portion of practice that was open to media.

With Worthy out, the Chiefs will look to players like Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Tyquan Thornton to step up.

Brown led the Chiefs with 10 receptions for 99 yards and 16 targets last week. Thornton caught a 38-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes in the 27-21 loss.
