Travis Kelce expects to be in the stands at Arrowhead this week — for a college game
It’s not often we see Travis Kelce sitting in the stands at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, unless it’s to watch a concert like the one a couple of summers ago that launched a new romantic era for him.
But he’s got plans to watch a game that will be played at Arrowhead there this week.
Kelce’s college alma mater, the University of Cincinnati, opens its season Thursday night against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Kelce, an Ohio native, played for the Bearcats when he was a student there from 2008 to 2011. His brother, Jason, who co-hosts the “New Heights” podcast with him, played there, too.
On a recent episode of the “Bussin’ With the Boys” podcast, hosted by former Nebraska standout Will Compton, Kelce said he planned to be at Arrowhead for the game.
“One-hundred percent. Yeah,” he said. “It’s right there.”
He said he’s lost so many bets that he’s due for a win, and he knows what he wants from Compton if the Bearcats win.
“I think my Bearcats are gonna ... come through, and you guys are gonna have to (bleeping) come onto ‘New Heights.’ And you’re rocking a (bleeping) Cincinnati jersey. Whole get-up, too. Pants, helmet.”
The Kelce brothers are fierce Bearcats supporter, something Chiefs fans know well.
Earlier this year before the Super Bowl, the Kansas City Zoo wished Kelce good luck with a post featuring Poppy, one of its resident bearcats. “Claws up for the Chiefs!” the zoo wrote on social media.
Last summer, the brothers hosted an episode of “New Heights” at their alma mater, where school officials presented them the diplomas they never received.
Both earned degrees — Travis in interdisciplinary studies from the College of Arts and Sciences and Jason in marketing. But neither were able to attend their graduation ceremonies.
Kelce made a — cough, cough — splash that night.
After shaking hands with university president Neville Pinto, Kelce chugged from a can of beer while his personal anthem, the Beastie Boys’ “Fight For Your Right,” blasted through the arena. He spiked the can, sending beer flying.
The Bearcats take on the Cornhuskers at 8 p.m. Thursday. It’s the season opener for both schools. The Bearcats will be the designated home team.
It will be the first meeting of their football teams since 1906, when the Cornhuskers demolished the Bearcats 41-0.
According to the Chiefs, this game was originally scheduled for 2020 as part of a home-and-home series, but the pandemic thwarted those plans.
