‘Hearts are broken’: Hunt family grieving after devastating Texas flood tragedy

The Hunt family is in mourning after devastating flooding struck central Texas over the July 4 holiday weekend.

The death toll has exceeded 90 from massive rains in the Texas Hill Country that led to catastrophic flooding of the Guadalupe River — and the heartbreaking losses include 9-year-old Janie Hunt.

The young girl was the great-granddaughter of the late oil billionaire William Herbert Hunt, who was the brother of the late Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt. Lamar Hunt’s son, Clark, is the NFL franchise’s chairman and CEO.

Janie Hunt was attending Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp along the river. Heavy rains struck before dawn on Friday — the July 4 holiday — and overflowed the waterway, which rose 26 feet in about 45 minutes.

Confirmed deaths at Camp Mystic, as of midday on Monday, included 27 girls — many just 8 and 9 years old — and camp counselors. The camp’s owner/director also died, and more girls and camp counselors are still missing, per reports.

A large-scale rescue and recovery operation is ongoing.

Margaret Hunt, Janie’s grandmother, confirmed Janie had died in the horrific flash flooding. Janie was attending the camp for the first time.

Tavia Hunt, Clark Hunt’s wife, shared on social media that the family, like many others, is overcome with sorrow.

“Our hearts are broken by the devastation from the floods in Wimberley and the tragic loss of so many lives — including a precious little Hunt cousin, along with several friends’ little girls,” Tavia Hunt wrote.

“If your heart is broken, I assure you God is near. He is gentle with your wounds. And He is still worthy—even when your soul is struggling to believe it. Trust doesn’t mean you’re over the pain; it means you’re handing it to the only One who can hold it with love and restore what was lost. For we do not grieve as those without hope.”
